Revenue's up but your own pay still isn't? Mike Michalowicz's Profit First method flips the order so growth finally reaches your pocket.

You do not need a 40-page business plan. You do need to know where the business is heading, what it must achieve in the next 90 days, and what you will stop doing to get there. In a 2025 Gallup survey, US owners with a plan, even an informal one, reported revenue growth more often than owners with none. That is a correlation, not proof, but it points the same way as most owners' experience.

A disclosure first: Simple-Growth publishes this guide and sells a program on this topic (Know Your Future, $497), so Kevin D'Ambros-Smith is not neutral. The Gallup figures below are the evidence; the program is one way to act on it. Checked 4 November 2026. Market: United States.

What Did Gallup Actually Find?

Gallup surveyed 5,926 working US adults, including 3,501 self-employed workers or business owners, between September 26 and November 3, 2025, and published the results on May 27, 2026. Four findings matter for an owner deciding whether to plan:

  • Few owners hold a plan. Among owner-employers (owners with at least one employee), 29% had an informal plan and 11% a detailed one, a combined 40%. Among non-employer owners, 22% had a plan.
  • Growth was higher with a plan. Owners with an informal plan: 38% reported year-over-year revenue growth. With a detailed plan: 27%. With no plan: 21%. Still developing one: 19%.
  • Confidence is low. Among owners without a detailed plan, 18% were highly confident they could write a satisfactory one, 46% somewhat confident and 35% not at all confident.
  • Help is available. 75% said they could definitely (38%) or probably (37%) find an outside person to help.

Read these with care. The growth figures are self-reported and are not proof that a plan causes growth: an owner who is already growing may be more likely to plan. And the detailed-plan group grew less often than the informal-plan group. The lesson is not "write more pages". It is "decide the few things that matter, and write them down".

What Does A Useful Plan Look Like?

One that turns a goal into a daily number. Kevin advised a mountain bike park that wanted 730 season passes for the season. 300 were returning holders, which left 430 new passes to sell in ten weeks. That goal became one number: about six sales a day. Once the owner knew the number, every decision was easier to test: does this email, this offer or this partnership help us make today's six?

That is the whole idea. A destination, converted into a milestone, converted into a number you can check every day.

What Are The Six Moves?

Know Your Future follows six moves in order. You can follow the same order on a single sheet of paper first:

  • Know your destination. Where do you want the business, and your life, to be in three years? Income, time, freedom and wealth are all fair answers.
  • Design your ideal business. What does a good week look like, and what does the business have to be for that to be true?
  • Visualize your future. Describe it so clearly that your team could picture it too.
  • Identify what makes you unique. Why would a customer choose you over the next option?
  • Know your why. The reason that will still matter in a bad month.
  • Capture your milestones. Turn the destination into 90-day targets and a number you can track.

Who Does Know Your Future Suit, And Who Should Skip It?

It suits you if you are an ambitious owner who is busy and profitable enough to keep going, but cannot say clearly where the business is heading in three years, or if your team keeps pulling in different directions.

Skip it if you already have a plan you review every quarter, or if what you need right now is hands-on help with a specific problem such as sales or cash. In that case, Quick Wins ($97) or Making It Happen ($297) may fit better, or a free 30-minute call will point you to the right one.

What you get: self-paced video training, a workbook to complete as you go, pre-made templates, a key points summary, and real examples from big brands and small businesses. The price is $497 USD, one payment, with instant access and a 30-day money-back guarantee as shown on the program page.

What Does An Owner Say?

"He really got our vision from the beginning and has been a huge help in putting together a clearer plan and strategy for the next five years. Working with Kevin D'Ambros-Smith has given us the space to pause and reflect — on where we are now, where we want to be and how we get there."

How Does This Compare With Other Ways To Plan?

  • Do it yourself on one page. Free. Use the six moves above. Best if you are disciplined and have a few hours.
  • A self-paced program. Fixed price, your own pace, a structure to follow. Know Your Future is one example.
  • One-on-one coaching. Quoted by conversation. Best if you want a person to challenge your numbers. Compare providers in our guides to ActionCOACH, Scaling Up and EOS.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do small businesses really need a written business plan?

You need clear decisions more than a long document. Gallup's 2025 survey found owners with an informal plan reported revenue growth more often than owners with none, but the data is self-reported and shows correlation, not cause.

How long should a small business plan be?

One page is enough to start: your three-year destination, your 90-day milestones, one number you can check every day, and what you will stop doing.

How often should I review it?

Review the 90-day milestones weekly and the three-year destination at least once a quarter.

What if I do not know where I want the business to go?

That is the most common starting point. Start with your life goal (income, time, freedom or wealth) and work back to what the business must do. The first move in Know Your Future is built for this.

Is there a refund if the program is not useful?

The Know Your Future page shows a 30-day money-back guarantee: if it is not useful, ask for a refund. Check the page for the current terms before you buy.

Be the owner who knows where the business is heading, and can say it in one sentence.

Not sure whether a program, a plan on paper or a coach fits? A 30-minute conversation will tell you.
