There is no single best business coach in the USA. Here are five criteria for choosing one, a fair look at the main formats, and why an outside perspective can change what you see in your own business.
Plenty of SME owners have people around them who'll tell them what they think: a spouse, a business partner, a longtime employee, sometimes an accountant who ventures an opinion once a year at tax time. What almost none of them have is anyone who checks, on a schedule, whether what was decided actually got done. That gap — between feedback and accountability — is the real reason most owners underperform their own stated plans.
Feedback is an opinion, given once, usually when asked for. Accountability is a structure: a commitment made out loud, a date attached to it, and someone checking back on that date regardless of how the week went. Most owners get plenty of the first and almost none of the second, because feedback is comfortable to give and accountability requires someone willing to follow up on an uncomfortable answer. Friends and family default to feedback. A good coach is built for accountability.
Every owner I've coached has, at some point, said they want to be held accountable — and every one of them has, at some point, quietly hoped the coach forgets to ask about the thing they didn't do. That instinct is normal, not a character flaw. Nobody enjoys reporting a miss. But the value of accountability isn't in the moment you report success — it's in the discomfort of reporting a miss, because that discomfort is what actually changes behaviour the following week. Remove it, and the plan reverts to being a nice document nobody executes.
It isn't a lecture. It's specific, scheduled, and unemotional: what did you say you'd do, did you do it, and if not, what changed? A good coach doesn't accept "busy" as a complete answer, because busy is true for every owner every week — the question is what got prioritised instead, and whether that was actually the right call. Over time, this rhythm does something feedback alone never does: it makes the owner's word to themselves reliable again.
Owners who get the most value from coaching aren't the ones looking for validation — they're the ones who show up wanting the follow-up question on the thing they didn't finish. If every session with your coach feels comfortable, that's usually a sign the accountability layer has quietly dropped out and what's left is just feedback with a fee attached.
The Simple-Growth System™ is built around this distinction deliberately: strategy sets the direction, but accountability is what makes the direction actually happen on the timeline you set for yourself, not the one that's convenient.
Getting plenty of opinions but no follow-through? That's exactly the gap the Simple-Growth System™ is built to close — get in touch with Kevin D'Ambros-Smith to talk about what real accountability would look like in your business.
