There is no single best business coach in the USA. Here are five criteria for choosing one, a fair look at the main formats, and why an outside perspective can change what you see in your own business.

Every SME owner starts as the best operator in their own business — the best salesperson, the best technician, the best fixer of problems. That's how the business got built. It's also, past a certain size, the exact thing capping how big it can get. Scaling requires a different identity than starting did, and almost nobody tells owners that the switch has to happen deliberately.

The Skill That Built the Business Isn't the Skill That Grows It

An operator's instinct is to be the best at the work. An owner's job is to build a business that doesn't need them to be the best at the work — which feels, to most founders, uncomfortably close to making themselves less important. That discomfort is precisely why so many businesses plateau at the size one person can personally hold together: the owner never gives themselves permission to stop being the hero of every deal, every fix, every fire.

Coachability Is the Actual Predictor of Growth

I've coached founders with more raw talent than anyone else in the room who never grew past a certain size, and less naturally gifted operators who scaled past them within two years. The difference wasn't skill. It was coachability — the willingness to hear that a habit that built the business is now the thing holding it back, and to actually change the habit rather than just nodding and continuing as before. A coach who only ever validates what an owner already believes isn't coaching. They're expensive company.

Identity Work Comes Before System Work

Every system I help a client build — delegation, KPIs, a sales process that doesn't depend on the owner personally closing every deal — fails if the owner's identity is still wired to "I'm the one who has to do this myself." That's why real coaching starts with the mindset shift, not the org chart. An owner who still believes they're indispensable will quietly sabotage every system built to make them dispensable, usually without realizing they're doing it.

What Getting the Most From a Coach Actually Looks Like

The owners who get the most out of coaching are the ones who show up ready to be told something they don't want to hear, and then actually change something because of it. Not motivation. Not a pep talk before a big meeting. A structured, sometimes uncomfortable process of becoming the kind of owner the next size of business actually needs.

Still the busiest person in your own business? That's usually an identity problem before it's a systems problem — get in touch with Kevin D'Ambros-Smith to work through the shift the Simple-Growth System™ is built around.
