There is no single best business coach in the USA. Here are five criteria for choosing one, a fair look at the main formats, and why an outside perspective can change what you see in your own business.
Ask most coaches a simple question: "If I didn't need you anymore, would that worry you?" Watch how they answer. Some coaches build a business out of being needed forever, an open-ended monthly retainer with no real plan for the owner to eventually run the business without them in the room. That's not coaching, it's a subscription to someone else's confidence. The honest answer to "how do I find a business coach" starts with this: the best ones are working toward their own redundancy, not away from it. Kevin D'Ambros-Smith has coached over two hundred businesses one-on-one since 2017, and the ones who've grown fastest are consistently the owners whose coach was transferring capability, not just delivering advice.
The named enemy here is dependency dressed up as support. It's easy for a coaching relationship to drift into the owner outsourcing their own judgment, calling before every decision instead of building the muscle to make it themselves. A coach who never pushes the owner toward independence, who keeps the engagement vague instead of building toward specific, owner-led milestones, has every financial incentive to keep things exactly as they are. That incentive is rarely malicious. It's just misaligned with what actually helps the business.
Three questions to ask before signing with any coach, or to ask of the one you already have.
"Kevin has been a game changer for us. I had tried a couple of high-profile US entrepreneur programs but found these just talked about 'mindset', whereas Kevin gives practical advice to grow your business that you can implement immediately."
— Brett Abeille
Most owners don't interrogate the structure of a coaching relationship because they're focused on the immediate problem the coach is helping solve, not the shape of the engagement itself. That's understandable, and it's also exactly why the question matters. A coach worth hiring will welcome it. Simple-Growth's engagements are built around a defined system, the four pillars of strategy, marketing, sales and productivity, specifically so progress and capability transfer can be measured, not assumed, and so the relationship has a shape instead of drifting indefinitely.
If you're not sure your current coaching relationship has a finish line, that's worth a direct conversation before your next renewal.
