The fastest, simplest ways to grow your business - no jargon, no fluff. Practical strategies that actually work for SME owners in the USA, New Zealand, and worldwide.

Most SME owners start their Monday morning strategy session by opening a competitor's website. New product. New price. New review count. By the time the coffee's finished, the plan for the week has quietly turned into a reaction to somebody else's business, not a decision about your own.
Here's the uncomfortable truth: you are almost certainly benchmarking against a business whose real numbers you cannot see. You are comparing your actual, internal, painfully accurate profit and loss to their marketing. That is not strategy. That is anxiety wearing a business-strategy costume.
The better benchmark is sitting in your own accounting software already: your business, this quarter, against your business the same quarter last year. It is the single most reliable strategic signal an SME owner has, and almost nobody uses it properly.
Every listed retailer in the world, from Woolworths to Walmart, reports something called same-store sales every quarter. It is not a comparison to a rival chain. It is a comparison of their own stores against their own stores, twelve months earlier, stripped of the effect of opening new locations. Public markets settled on this measure decades ago because comparing yourself to a competitor with unknown costs, unknown debt, and unknown margins is close to meaningless. Comparing yourself to your own trailing period, on the other hand, tells you exactly one thing: are you actually growing, or is the market carrying you.
The enemy here isn't your competitor. It's competitor-envy planning: the habit of setting strategy by reacting to what you can see, their website, their ads, their reviews, instead of what you can measure, your own margin, your own capacity, your own cash. You cannot out-strategise a business using data you don't actually have.
This is the exact framework Kevin uses with Simple-Growth clients to replace guesswork with a number they can actually trust.
1. Pull your own numbers first. Before you open a single competitor's page, pull this quarter's revenue, margin, and capacity utilisation next to the same quarter last year. That's your baseline.
2. Match the calendar, not the convenience. Compare quarter to quarter, not quarter to the quarter before it. Most businesses have seasonality that makes sequential comparisons lie to you.
3. Split growth into two buckets. How much of the change is volume, you selling more, versus price or category tailwind, the market moving without you? A business growing 12 percent in a category growing 15 percent is actually losing ground.
4. Score three levers, not one. Revenue growth alone hides a shrinking margin or a team running at 95 percent capacity with nothing left for new work. Track all three side by side, every quarter.
5. Only then, glance outward. Once your own baseline is set, a competitor scan becomes useful context instead of the whole plan, a sense-check, not a steering wheel.

Most owners already know this, intellectually. They still check the competitor's Instagram before they check their own numbers, because the competitor's page is easy to look at and their own profit and loss, if it's not looking good, is not. That is not a knowledge gap. It is an accountability gap, nobody is sitting across the table each quarter asking, what did your own numbers actually do, and what are you doing about it.
This is precisely where a coach earns their keep, and it's the reason the Simple-Growth System™ builds a quarterly Same-Quarter review into every client relationship: not because owners don't know what to measure, but because measuring it consistently, without flinching, is the hard part.
If your business strategy is built on watching everyone else's business instead of measuring your own, that's the first thing we fix.
