There is no single best business coach in the USA. Here are five criteria for choosing one, a fair look at the main formats, and why an outside perspective can change what you see in your own business.

Small Business Saturday falls on November 28 this year — just 27 days before Christmas. That makes 2026 one of the most compressed holiday selling windows small and medium business owners across New Zealand, Australia, the UK and the US have faced in recent memory, and most Q4 plans were quietly built around a longer runway than that.

Here’s the number that should worry owners more than the calendar. Industry forecasts put 2026 holiday retail spending growth at roughly 4.5% year-over-year — but more than half of that projected growth is expected to come purely from higher prices, not more units sold, according to Main Street America’s September 2026 holiday season briefing. Separately, 66% of small businesses say the holiday period drives their overall financial health for the year. Put those two facts together and you get a genuinely dangerous outcome: plenty of owners are about to post their best-looking quarter of the year, on a calendar with less room than usual to fix a mistake, without knowing whether any of it is real growth.

Revenue Growth Isn’t the Same as Margin Growth

Here’s the trap. An owner looks at a 12% jump in holiday revenue over last year and calls it a win. But if input costs rose 9% and prices only kept pace with that, the “growth” is mostly the business paying itself back for its own higher costs — not new demand, not more customers, not a stronger market position. It shows up as a great top-line number and a flat or shrinking bank balance.

This isn’t a hypothetical. It’s exactly the pattern behind why so many owners tell me January feels worse than the “record” holiday season should have allowed. They didn’t have a bad Q4. They had a Q4 they never actually measured.

The named enemy here isn’t inflation, and it isn’t the shorter calendar — both of those are just conditions everyone is trading in. The enemy is treating a bigger revenue number as proof of a healthier business without ever separating what portion of it came from price and what portion came from volume.

The Pre-Season Margin Check

This is the same three-step check I run with clients before every high-stakes selling period, adjusted for this year’s compressed timeline.

1. Split last year’s holiday revenue into price versus volume. Take last year’s average selling price and this year’s, multiply by unit counts, and isolate how much of any revenue change is coming from customers paying more versus buying more. If you don’t have this split, ask your bookkeeper or accountant to pull it — most accounting platforms can produce it from existing sales data in under an hour.

2. Calendar-proof every planned promotion. Map each campaign, discount and push against the real 27-day window between Small Business Saturday and Christmas. Anything built assuming more runway than that gets cut, compressed or moved to January now — not discovered in week two when there’s no time left to adjust.

3. Price-test your hero product or service before demand peaks. A small, controlled price move in early October tells you far more about what the market will actually bear than any decision made mid-surge, when you can’t afford to get it wrong and can’t easily walk it back.

“Kevin has been a game changer for us. I had tried a couple of high-profile US entrepreneur programs but found these just talked about ‘mindset’, whereas Kevin gives practical advice to grow your business that you can implement immediately.”

— Brett Abeille

Why Most Owners Skip This Every Year

Not because it’s hard. Because there’s no accountability structure forcing it to happen before the season starts, not after. Most owners are heads-down running the business by the time October hits, and a margin check feels like the kind of thing you’ll “do properly next year” — until next year is also a scramble. The real obstacle is sequencing: this check has to happen in the calm before the season, and almost nobody schedules calm on purpose. That’s the gap a second set of eyes — a coach, an advisor, someone whose only job that week is to make you do the check — actually closes.

Three Things to Do This Week

  • Pull last year’s holiday sales data and get the price-vs-volume split started, even roughly.
  • Block two hours this week — not in November — to walk your promotional calendar against the real 27-day window.
  • Pick one product or service and run a small, reversible price test before the season peaks.

Key Takeaways

  • Small Business Saturday 2026 falls November 28, leaving just 27 days until Christmas — one of the shortest holiday selling windows in recent years.
  • More than half of projected 2026 holiday sales growth is expected to come from higher prices, not more units sold, per Main Street America’s September 2026 holiday briefing.
  • 66% of small businesses say the holiday season drives their overall annual financial health, raising the stakes on getting the pricing right.
  • Splitting revenue growth into price versus volume before the season starts is the fastest way to know if your business is actually growing or just charging more.
  • A compressed calendar punishes owners who discover pricing problems mid-season and rewards those who test and adjust before demand peaks.

Want a second set of eyes on your Q4 numbers before the season locks you in? That’s exactly the kind of check the Simple-Growth System runs with clients every quarter.
