The fastest, simplest ways to grow your business - no jargon, no fluff. Practical strategies that actually work for SME owners in the USA, New Zealand, and worldwide.

Most owners finish a long day, look at the task list, and find the one thing that actually mattered is still sitting untouched. The usual suspect is a bloated to-do list. The real cause is almost always how often the brain had to switch between unrelated tasks that day. If you want to stop being the bottleneck in your own business, the fix starts with the calendar, not the task list. Kevin D'Ambros-Smith has coached over two hundred SME owners since 2017, and the owners who feel busiest and move the slowest almost always share the same calendar pattern: constant switching, never a clear block.
The enemy isn't the workload. It's the habit of treating every interruption as equally urgent, the email in between the meeting, the Slack message during the client call, the quick question that breaks a block of focused work into three fifteen-minute fragments. Each switch feels small. The accumulated cost isn't.
The American Psychological Association, citing research by Rubinstein, Meyer and Evans, found that the brief mental blocks created by switching between tasks can cost as much as 40 percent of someone's productive time. Separately, attention researcher Gloria Mark's work at the University of California, Irvine found it takes roughly 23 minutes to fully refocus after an interruption. An owner checking messages every few minutes during their highest-value work isn't being efficient. They're paying a constant tax on their best hours.
This is the simple restructure Kevin runs with clients who feel busy but aren't moving the business forward. It doesn't add more hours. It stops wasting the ones already there.
“Kevin had a no-nonsense approach and tackled the issues head on. Accountability was the key.”
— Ashley Berrysmith, Icehouse Coaching Programme
Most owners already suspect their calendar is the problem. They don't fix it because being instantly reachable feels like leadership, and stepping away from the inbox for 90 minutes feels like risking a dropped ball. It is almost always the opposite: the business that only runs because the owner answers everything immediately is a business that can't grow past the owner's attention span.
An outside accountability partner earns their keep here by holding the Deep Block when the owner's own instinct is to answer just this one message. That single piece of discipline, held consistently, is often worth more than any new productivity tool. It is also one of the simplest things for a coach to hold an owner accountable to, which is exactly why it works: no new system to learn, just a block on the calendar that someone else expects to see protected.
If your calendar is running you instead of the other way around, that's exactly the kind of fix we build in the first 90 days.
