The fastest, simplest ways to grow your business - no jargon, no fluff. Practical strategies that actually work for SME owners in the USA, New Zealand, and worldwide.

Ask most SME owners what would help their productivity and they'll answer with a tool: a better calendar app, a project management system, an AI assistant to draft their emails. Almost none of them answer with the actual fix: doing less.
Productivity isn't a tooling problem for most SME owners — it's a prioritisation problem wearing a tooling costume. You can have the most efficient task-management system in the world and still be busy all day producing results that don't matter, because efficiency only compounds the value of what you're already doing. If what you're doing is low-leverage, efficient execution just gets you to the wrong destination faster. Inside the Simple-Growth System™, the 90/10 rule is one of the first diagnostics we run with a new client, and it's almost always uncomfortable.
The 90/10 rule is simple to state and hard to face: roughly 10% of what you do in a week drives 90% of the results that matter to growth — revenue, key relationships, decisions only you can make. The other 90% of your time is spent on tasks that feel productive, and might even need doing, but don't move the business forward.
Track a real week — not a typical week, an actual logged one — against two categories: leverage activity and maintenance activity. Most owners are shocked to find they spend fewer than five hours a week on anything that actually grows the business. The rest is answering emails that could be delegated, attending meetings that could be a message, and doing work someone else on the team could do at 80% of your quality for a fraction of the cost.
Once the audit is done, the instinct is to try to do everything a little faster. That's the trap. The fix is to actively stop doing the bottom half of the list, not optimise it. Three questions clear most of it: does this need to happen at all, does it need to happen this often, and does it need to be me.
Anything that survives all three questions stays on your plate. Everything else gets delegated, automated, or eliminated outright — and eliminated is the option owners resist most, because it feels like admitting the task never mattered. Often it didn't.
Identifying your highest-leverage activity is only half the work — the other half is defending the calendar space for it, because low-value work will refill any gap you create within a week if you let it. Block the leverage work first, before the week fills with everything else, and treat those blocks with the same non-negotiable status you'd give a client meeting.
This is where most productivity advice fails owners: it optimises the calendar you already have instead of rebuilding it around what actually matters. A calendar that's full isn't a sign of productivity — it's often the clearest sign that the 90/10 rule hasn't been applied yet.
For an SME owner running lean, this discipline extends beyond your own calendar into how the team operates. The same audit applied to a warehouse process, a customer service function, or a sales team's activity almost always reveals the same pattern: a small number of actions driving most of the outcome, buried inside a much larger volume of busywork that's never been questioned.
If your week is full but growth has stalled, the fix probably isn't a better system for managing more tasks — it's a harder look at which tasks deserve to be on the list at all. That's an uncomfortable audit to run on yourself, which is exactly why most owners never do it without someone pushing them to. It's one of the first things we work through with a new client inside the Simple-Growth System™, and it's usually where the first real time gets freed up.
