The fastest, simplest ways to grow your business - no jargon, no fluff. Practical strategies that actually work for SME owners in the USA, New Zealand, and worldwide.

Your strategic plan is probably sitting in a folder nobody has opened since the day you wrote it. That is not a discipline problem — it is a system problem, and it is the real reason so many well-planned SMEs drift off course by March. The fix is not a better plan. It is a recurring 90-minute meeting most owners have never actually scheduled: the Quarterly Reset Review.
Every September and October, SME owners across New Zealand and Australia do the same thing: they block out a day, write down goals for the year ahead, feel genuinely energised — and then never look at the document again until the next planning day rolls around. The plan was never the weak link. The absence of a structured way to check it against reality, every single quarter, is.
Robert Kaplan and David Norton's decades of research into the balanced scorecard found the same pattern across hundreds of organisations: strategy fails far more often in execution than in design. The plan was rarely wrong. The business simply had no mechanism for translating it into what changes this quarter, and what stops.
In a business under $10M in revenue, this gap is even more dangerous, because there is no strategy office, no PMO, and no quarterly board pack forcing the conversation. If you do not build the review in deliberately, it simply will not happen — and you will find out your strategy quietly died sometime around Easter.
This is not another planning day. It is a short, structured 90-minute session, run every 13 weeks, with one job: compare what you said you would do against what actually happened, and reset.
1. The Scoreboard Check — Pull up the three to five numbers that actually tell you whether the business is winning this quarter. Not fifteen metrics. Three to five. If a number did not move, ask why before you plan anything new.
2. The Kill or Keep Call — Every initiative from last quarter gets one of three verdicts: keep going as planned, adjust the approach, or kill it outright. Most owners never formally kill anything, which is exactly how a to-do list becomes a graveyard of half-finished projects.
3. The One Change — Pick the single highest-leverage change for the next 13 weeks. Not five priorities. One. Write it on a single page, with a name attached to who owns it.
This is the discipline at the centre of the Simple-Growth System™: a strategy is only as good as the review cadence built around it.
"Kevin has simplified a lot of the processes that have been floating in my head. It has made things easier to navigate as we begin to launch a new service offering to the market. I feel confident and able to do this, thanks to Kevin."

Most owners know they should review progress regularly. Almost none do it consistently, for one honest reason: there is no one else in the room holding them to it. A staff meeting covers this week's fires. A board meeting, if one exists, covers governance. The quarterly strategic reset — the unglamorous, unexciting comparison of plan versus reality — has no natural home on the calendar, so it gets quietly skipped, quarter after quarter.
This is precisely the gap an external coach closes. Not by writing your strategy for you, but by being the fixed point in the calendar that will not let the review slide — and by asking the sharper questions an owner, too close to their own business, will not ask themselves.
If your strategic plan is a document you wrote once and never opened again, that is the first thing we fix.
