There is no single best business coach in the USA. Here are five criteria for choosing one, a fair look at the main formats, and why an outside perspective can change what you see in your own business.

A new survey of 785 small business owners in the US found that 77% say the experience met or exceeded their expectations, and only 4% regret starting up. Read one line further and the picture changes: 56% hit a major cash flow crisis within their first three years, and 80% still deal with cash flow stress multiple times a year — not as new owners finding their feet, but as established operators who never fully solved the problem. I see the same pattern in almost every SME and FMCG business I coach, regardless of how long they've been trading.

What the survey actually found

Centiment surveyed 785 US small business owners for Bluevine between 2–11 February 2026 (margin of error roughly ±3% at the 95% confidence level). Alongside the headline satisfaction numbers, 27% of owners reported significantly higher stress and burnout than they'd anticipated going in. On the financial side: 56% experienced a major cash flow crisis in their first three years of trading, 25% report cash flow stress at least monthly, and 80% deal with it multiple times a year. Nearly 80% said they spend as much or more time on financial tasks than expected, and 42% named bookkeeping their largest weekly time drain. Bluevine's VP of Product Management, Sid Bellur, summed it up: "When 80% of owners deal with cash flow stress multiple times a year, it's a signal that financial management isn't a one-time setup, but a constant, demanding job function."

Why "I'll get through this and then things settle" is the wrong story

Most owners treat their first cash flow scare as a rite of passage — something you survive early, learn from, and put behind you. The data says otherwise. If cash flow stress were purely a start-up problem, it would fade as the business matured. Instead, 80% of owners are still dealing with it multiple times a year, long after the early scramble is over. That's not a maturity curve. That's a business function nobody ever actually built — it just gets managed, badly, on an emergency basis, indefinitely.

The real problem isn't cash. It's that finance was never built as a system

Every SME owner builds a sales process. Most build some version of a marketing engine. Almost none build a cash system — a defined, repeatable way of seeing what's coming before it arrives. Instead, finance runs on the bank balance: check the account, react to what's there, hope the next payment lands before the next bill is due. That's not financial management. That's financial surveillance, and it only flags problems after they've already started.

It also concentrates the risk in exactly the wrong place. In most businesses I work with, the owner is the only one who sees the full cash picture — and usually only under pressure, at the point a decision can't wait. Decisions made that way are rarely the best ones available. They're the fastest ones, made by the most stressed person in the business, with the least runway to think it through.

The fix: a rolling cash system, not an annual budget

An annual budget tells you what you hoped would happen twelve months ago. It doesn't help you on a Tuesday morning when a supplier payment and a customer's late invoice collide. What actually works is smaller, more frequent, and far less glamorous than a budget: a rolling 13-week cash forecast, reviewed for 20 minutes every week, built around three simple components.

First, a weekly cash-in, cash-out view across the next 13 weeks that rolls forward every week — so you're always looking 13 weeks ahead, not down at what's left today. Second, three trigger thresholds — green, amber, red — each with a pre-agreed action attached, decided in a calm moment, not a crisis. Amber might mean delaying a discretionary purchase; red might mean a defined conversation with a supplier or the bank, had two weeks before it's forced on you. Third, someone other than the owner responsible for keeping the forecast current. If the business only sees its cash position when the owner has time to look, the system doesn't exist — it's a habit, and habits break under pressure.

Why this bites harder in FMCG

For FMCG owners specifically, the mismatch is structural, not occasional. Stock has to be bought and paid for weeks or months before it sells. Retail and distribution customers routinely take 30, 60, or 90 days to pay, while suppliers want paying in 7 to 30. Promotional and seasonal spend lands in concentrated bursts that don't line up neatly with when it converts to sales. None of that is a failure of the owner — it's the nature of the category. But it's exactly why a rolling forecast that maps supplier terms against customer payment terms, week by week, isn't optional here. It's the difference between a seasonal peak that funds the next quarter and one that quietly drains it.

Build the system before you need it

A cash flow crisis isn't a sign the business is failing. Often it's a sign the business is growing faster than its financial infrastructure was ever built to handle. The owners who get past it for good aren't the ones who get better at reacting quickly — they're the ones who stop needing to react at all, because the system tells them what's coming before it's urgent. That shift — from watching the bank balance to running a forecast — is one of the first things we put in place inside the Simple-Growth System™, because very little else in a business runs cleanly while the owner is still firefighting cash.

Still finding out about cash problems after they've started?

Inside the Simple-Growth System™, we build the rolling cash forecast, the trigger thresholds, and the reporting cadence alongside you — so cash becomes something the business runs on, not something the owner survives. I've done this with 100+ SME and FMCG owners across 30+ industries. If your business is still being run from the bank balance, let's fix that.
