The fastest, simplest ways to grow your business - no jargon, no fluff. Practical strategies that actually work for SME owners in the USA, New Zealand, and worldwide.

Most SME sales teams spend nearly all their energy chasing net-new customers, while the highest-probability sale in the business — the one sitting in the existing customer file — goes almost entirely untouched.
Winning a new customer costs more in time, marketing spend, and sales effort than almost any other move a business makes. Selling more to an existing customer costs a fraction of that, because the trust, the relationship, and the buying history already exist. Yet most SME sales processes are built entirely around new-logo acquisition, with expansion revenue left to chance — a customer mentions a need in passing, and maybe someone follows up, maybe not.
The businesses that do this well don't treat expansion as an occasional nice-to-have raised awkwardly at the end of a call. They build it into the calendar: a scheduled account review at a fixed interval, a defined trigger — a reorder, a renewal, a seasonal peak — that prompts a specific conversation about what else the customer needs. For an FMCG supplier, that might be a formal quarterly range review with a retail buyer instead of waiting for them to ask what else is available. The system does the remembering; nobody has to rely on a rep's memory or good intentions.
The best version of this conversation isn't a pitch — it's a question rooted in what you already know about the customer. "You've been reordering the 500ml range every six weeks — has demand picked up enough that the case-pack pricing makes sense now?" lands completely differently than a generic "anything else we can help with?" It works because it proves you've been paying attention, which is the same thing that built the relationship in the first place.
Owners often separate "keeping customers" from "growing revenue," but they're the same discipline pointed at the same account. A customer who's being asked good, specific questions on a regular cadence is far less likely to drift to a competitor, and far more likely to buy more in the meantime. The scheduled account conversation is simultaneously your best retention tool and your cheapest growth lever — most SMEs are just leaving it to chance.
