The fastest, simplest ways to grow your business - no jargon, no fluff. Practical strategies that actually work for SME owners in the USA, New Zealand, and worldwide.

Walk into most SME marketing meetings and you'll find the same instinct at work: lead with features. List what the product does, how it's made, what makes it technically better. It's a natural instinct — you know your product better than anyone, so you talk about the product.
It's also the slowest way to convert a stranger into a customer. Buyers don't remember specifications. They remember what happened to someone like them. Inside the Simple-Growth System™, one of the fastest shifts we make with a marketing-constrained SME is moving the centre of gravity from product spec to customer story — and it costs nothing to make the change.
A spec sheet asks the buyer to do the work: translate a feature into a benefit, imagine themselves using it, and trust that it will solve their actual problem. That's three cognitive steps between your ad and a sale, and most buyers won't take all three, especially scrolling past your content in a feed.
A customer story does that translation for them. "We were losing four hours a week on manual stock counts until we switched" tells a buyer exactly what changes for someone like them, with proof it isn't just a claim. The feature is still in there — it's just carried by a result instead of leading with the mechanism.
Most SME owners believe they don't have enough good customer stories to build a content strategy around. In every case we've tested this with a client, that's wrong — they have the stories, they've just never asked for them systematically.
Build one simple habit: every time a customer renews, refers someone, or thanks your team unprompted, that's a story-collection trigger. Ask three questions — what was the problem before, what changed, what would you tell someone considering us — and you have a usable story in under five minutes. Do this consistently for one quarter and you'll have more raw material than a content calendar can use.
A single strong customer story isn't one post — it's a campaign. The same story can run as a short-form video clip, a before/after data point, a quote graphic, a case-study page, and a sales-call reference all from one conversation. This is exactly the "single-channel, done properly" discipline we've written about before: rather than producing five thin pieces of generic content a week, produce one strong story and extract five formats from it.
The result compounds. Prospects trust peer proof more than brand claims, and a library of real stories becomes an asset your sales team can pull from in every conversation — not just something marketing posts and forgets.
For FMCG brands, the story doesn't have to be a customer testimonial in the traditional sense — it can be the stockist who reordered early, the independent retailer who moved you to eye level because sell-through beat their forecast, or the repeat purchase data itself told as a story ("shoppers who try it, buy it again within three weeks"). These are proof points buyers and retail buyers alike respond to far more than another ingredient callout or packaging refresh.
If your marketing content is still built around what your product does rather than what happened for someone who bought it, that's the fastest fix available to you this month. It doesn't require new budget — it requires a system for capturing what your best customers are already telling you. That's the kind of low-cost, high-leverage shift we build into a client's marketing plan inside the Simple-Growth System™, and it's worth a conversation if your content calendar has gone quiet.
