The fastest, simplest ways to grow your business - no jargon, no fluff. Practical strategies that actually work for SME owners in the USA, New Zealand, and worldwide.

Most lost sales don't die in the negotiation. They die in the first fifteen minutes of the discovery call, when the salesperson — often the owner — starts pitching before they've actually found out what the prospect needs. It feels like momentum. It's usually the reason the deal goes cold.
Watch a discovery call that goes wrong and you'll usually see the same pattern: the rep talks for the first ten minutes about the product, the company, the features, the awards. By the time they ask a real question about the prospect's situation, the prospect has already mentally filed the call under "another pitch" and started thinking about how to end it politely. Selling isn't about how well you can describe what you do — it's about how precisely you can name the prospect's problem back to them before you ever mention the solution.
A discovery call that works spends most of its time on three questions, in order: what's actually broken right now, what has it cost them to leave it broken, and what happens if it stays broken for another twelve months. Most SME sales processes skip straight to "here's what we offer" without ever making the prospect say the cost of inaction out loud. When a prospect articulates their own problem and its cost, in their own words, the pitch that follows almost sells itself — because it's answering a question they just asked themselves.
The other mistake is treating every "tell me more" the same way. A prospect who's engaged asks specific questions about implementation and timeline. A prospect who's being polite asks vague, general questions to end the call gracefully. Reps who can't tell the difference keep chasing warm-sounding leads that were never going anywhere, while genuinely qualified prospects go quiet from lack of a proper follow-up because the rep assumed the "not interested" ones were worth more attention.
If your close rate has been flat despite decent lead volume, the fix is rarely a better pitch. It's a better discovery call — one built to qualify and diagnose, not to perform. Score every call on how much the prospect talked relative to the rep, and you'll usually find your best-converting calls are the ones where the rep said the least.
