There is no single best business coach in the USA. Here are five criteria for choosing one, a fair look at the main formats, and why an outside perspective can change what you see in your own business.
Most SME marketing budgets chase reach they don't own. Every dollar into paid social or search rents attention from a platform that can change its algorithm, its pricing, or its rules tomorrow — and your access to your own customers disappears with the next update. Meanwhile the one channel almost every business already has permission to use sits neglected: the email list.
Platform reach feels efficient because it's easy to buy. But you don't own it — you lease it, at a price the platform sets, under terms the platform can change without warning. Organic reach on most social platforms has been in structural decline for years, pushing SMEs into paying for the same attention they used to get free. That's not a marketing strategy; it's a recurring tax on staying visible to people who already chose to follow you.
An owned audience — email addresses, SMS opt-ins, a direct line to your actual customers — doesn't have that problem. Nobody can deplatform your list. Nobody changes the algorithm on an inbox. It's the one channel-owning-your-customer asset most SMEs already have permission to build and almost never invest in properly.
It's rarely a decision — it's neglect by default. Owners collect emails at checkout or sign-up and then do nothing structured with them beyond an occasional promotional blast, usually only when sales are slow. That pattern trains subscribers to associate your emails with "buy something," and open rates decline accordingly. A list treated as an occasional discount channel behaves like one.
The fix isn't more emails — it's a defined purpose for the list beyond promotion: useful content, first access to new lines, and only then, offers. Segmented by purchase history or engagement, not blasted identically to everyone on the file.
A functioning email or SMS programme has three parts: a consistent cadence regardless of whether there's a promotion running, so the channel stays trusted rather than becoming spam; a welcome sequence for new subscribers that earns attention before it asks for a sale; and a re-engagement trigger for anyone who's gone quiet, rather than leaving dormant contacts to decay the list's deliverability.
For an FMCG brand, this is often the highest-leverage marketing investment available, because retail and e-commerce customers who buy repeatedly are worth systemising a relationship with directly — rather than re-winning their attention through paid channels every single time they need reminding you exist.
The businesses getting genuine cut-through on constrained budgets aren't necessarily spending more — they're spending on an asset that compounds. A well-run list gets more valuable every month: bigger, better segmented, more trusted. A paid campaign resets to zero the day you stop paying for it. Over a year, one of those approaches builds equity and the other just buys time.
Not sure what your existing customer list is actually worth, or how to turn it into a real channel instead of an occasional discount blast? Building an owned-audience system that compounds instead of resetting every month is core marketing work inside the Simple-Growth System™ — get in touch with Kevin D'Ambros-Smith to see what yours could be doing for you.
