There is no single best business coach in the USA. Here are five criteria for choosing one, a fair look at the main formats, and why an outside perspective can change what you see in your own business.

Most SME sales training focuses on the pitch — the features to mention, the objections to handle, the close to attempt. Almost none of it focuses on the first five minutes of the call, where the outcome is usually already decided.

By the time your salesperson launches into the pitch, the prospect has already made a judgment: is this person worth my time, do they understand my situation, and are they here to sell me something or solve something for me. Get those five minutes wrong and no pitch recovers. Get them right and the "pitch" barely needs to happen. Inside the Simple-Growth System™, we spend more time coaching the opening of a sales call than the close — because the close is a formality once the opening is done properly.

Stop Opening With Your Company

The instinctive opening for most SME sales reps is a version of "thanks for your time, let me tell you a bit about us." It's polite, and it's a mistake. It signals that the call is about you, not the prospect, and it burns the most valuable minutes of the conversation on information the prospect can get from your website.

The stronger open puts the prospect's situation first: a specific, researched observation about their business, followed by a direct question about where it currently stands. "I noticed you've expanded to two new retailers this year — how's fulfilment holding up with that growth?" does more in one sentence than three minutes of company background.

Diagnose Before You Prescribe

The single biggest tell of an SME sales call that's about to fail is a rep who starts describing solutions before they've established what's actually broken. Buyers can feel the difference between being sold to and being understood, and they trust the second one enough to buy.

Build a short, consistent set of diagnostic questions your team asks on every call before any product is mentioned — what's working, what isn't, what's been tried already, what does success look like in six months. This isn't a script to sound thorough. It's information you genuinely need to pitch the right thing instead of your default pitch, and it's the difference between a rep who sounds like every other rep the prospect has spoken to this month and one who sounds like they've actually listened.

The Permission Question That Changes Everything

One line, asked early, changes the entire dynamic of the call: "Would it be useful if I asked a few questions about how things are running today before I show you anything?" It sounds small. It reframes the entire call from a pitch the prospect is enduring to a conversation they've agreed to — and prospects who've said yes to that question are dramatically more open for the next twenty minutes than prospects who weren't asked at all.

Building This Into Your Team, Not Just Your Best Rep

Every sales team has one person who does this instinctively and closes at double the team average. The mistake most owners make is treating that as a personality trait instead of a teachable structure. It isn't charisma — it's a repeatable sequence: researched opener, diagnostic questions, permission-based transition, then and only then the pitch. Script the sequence, not the exact words, and roleplay it until it's second nature for the whole team, not just your top performer.

If your sales conversion has plateaued and you've been focused on closing technique, the fix is very likely earlier in the call than you're looking. The first five minutes are coachable, measurable, and — unlike most sales training — they show up in your numbers within a fortnight. That's exactly the kind of practical, scripted change we build into a client's sales system inside the Simple-Growth System™.

Ask most owners what they do and they'll answer instantly. Ask them why their business exists, beyond making money, and watch the pause. That pause is costing you customers, hires and referrals.
