There is no single best business coach in the USA. Here are five criteria for choosing one, a fair look at the main formats, and why an outside perspective can change what you see in your own business.
Most delegation failures don't look like failures at first. The owner hands off a task, the team member does something, and three weeks later the owner is redoing it themselves, muttering that "it's just easier to do it myself." That conclusion is almost always wrong. The task wasn't undelegatable — it was handed off without ever defining what finished actually looked like.
"Sort out the supplier issue" or "get the new listing live" sounds like a clear instruction. It isn't. It hands over an activity without specifying the standard the result has to meet, by when, or how the owner will know it's actually done rather than just attempted. The team member does their honest best interpretation of an ambiguous brief — and when it doesn't match what the owner had in their head, the owner reads that as a competence problem instead of a delegation problem.
This is the single most common reason owners quietly take work back: not because their team can't do it, but because nobody ever defined what "done" meant before the work started.
A workable handoff answers four things before the task leaves the owner's desk: what does the finished result actually look like, specifically enough that two different people would recognise it identically; what's the deadline, and is it a hard date or a target; what decisions is the person empowered to make alone versus what needs to come back for a check-in; and how will success be verified — a number, a customer response, a specific deliverable, not a feeling.
This takes five extra minutes at handoff and saves the hours the owner would otherwise spend reworking a result that technically fulfilled the instruction but missed the intent.
Owners who've been burned by vague handoffs often overcorrect into micromanagement — checking in constantly because they no longer trust delegation to work. The fix isn't more checking, it's better-timed checking. One scheduled check-in at a defined milestone, tied to the Definition of Done agreed at the start, does more than five unscheduled "just checking in" interruptions, which erode the ownership you're trying to build in the first place.
The scheduled check-in also surfaces problems while there's still time to fix them, rather than only at the deadline when the gap between expectation and delivery is already baked in.
The businesses that delegate well don't have naturally better talent — they have a habit of never handing off a task without first agreeing what done looks like, out loud, before anyone starts. It becomes a two-minute conversation that owners run automatically: what does this look like finished, by when, what can you decide without me, and how will we both know it worked. Skip that conversation and you're not delegating — you're hoping.
Still finding yourself redoing work you thought you'd handed off? That's rarely a talent gap on your team — it's almost always a missing Definition of Done. Building that handoff discipline into how your business runs is core to the systems work inside the Simple-Growth System™.
