Checking your banking app at 2am over an invoice that's two weeks late? You're not alone — and the fix needs a witness, not just a spreadsheet.

Choose an Icehouse programme if you want to learn alongside other owners in a structured, in-person group, and your turnover fits one of its bands. Choose one-on-one coaching if you want a plan built around your business alone, on your timeline, with someone holding you to it. Many owners sensibly do one, then the other.

A disclosure first: Simple-Growth publishes this guide, and Kevin D'Ambros-Smith coaches for Simple-Growth. Kevin is also a partner of The Icehouse and has presented on its programmes, so he is not neutral. That is why this page explains who each option suits instead of ranking them. Everything said about The Icehouse comes from its own programmes page, read on 5 November 2026 (New Zealand time). If something is out of date or wrong, let Kevin know and it will be corrected. Market: New Zealand.

What Does Each One Offer?

  • The Icehouse lists group, in-person programmes and workshops for New Zealand owners and leaders, grouped mostly by turnover band, plus short workshops on finance and sales and a residential AI course for leaders.
  • Simple-Growth offers one-on-one coaching with Kevin, who has coached 200+ companies across 30+ industries since 2017. The first step is a free 30-minute conversation.

Who Does Each Option Suit?

  • You learn best in a room of peers. An Icehouse programme. Group, in-person days with other owners are the point.
  • Your turnover fits a band and you want a defined curriculum. An Icehouse programme. The bands and lengths are published.
  • You need a skill block, such as finance or sales, for you and your team. An Icehouse workshop.
  • You are trading but stuck, and you do not know where. Simple-Growth. It starts by finding the real constraint before you spend another dollar.
  • You want a plan built around your business alone, with owners, dates and measures. Simple-Growth, with a 90-day plan and a regular rhythm.
  • You want to check co-funding. Simple-Growth is an approved Regional Business Partner Network provider, and eligible New Zealand businesses may be able to access up to 50% co-funding for one-to-one coaching. Funding is not guaranteed.

This is not for you if you want someone else to do the work. Neither a programme nor a coach can.

Six Questions To Settle It

  • What is the one problem costing you most right now? If you can name it, a skill block may fix it. If you cannot, start with a diagnostic.
  • Do you get more from a room of peers or from a private conversation?
  • Can you be away from the business for the programme days, and who runs it while you are gone?
  • What can you invest this quarter, in dollars and in hours, and have you asked about co-funding?
  • Does the person or programme have run-it-yourself experience in situations like yours? Ask for examples.
  • What does success look like in 90 days, and how will you both know?

What Does An Owner Say?

"Kevin has some amazing ideas around marketing, things we would have never thought of ourselves. He has gone above and beyond what he needed to!"

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does an Icehouse programme cost?

Its programmes page lists $6,295 + GST for the Business Owner Programme and $7,850 + GST for the Smart Governance Programme. The Owner Manager Programme price was not listed on the page read.

Can I do an Icehouse programme and one-on-one coaching?

Yes. A programme gives you a framework and peers; coaching applies it to your business. Be clear about what each is for, so you do not pay twice for the same problem.

Is co-funding available?

Possibly. The Management Capability Development Fund can cover up to 50% of one-to-one and up to 75% of group training costs, capped at $5,000 per business per year, for businesses with fewer than 50 full-time equivalent staff. Check current rules and eligibility with the Regional Business Partner Network.

Is Simple-Growth only for certain industries?

No. Clients are chosen by mindset, not sector, across 30+ industries.

Not sure which suits you? A 30-minute conversation will tell you honestly whether a programme, coaching or neither is the right move, and you are welcome to take the answers anywhere.
