There is no single best business coach in the USA. Here are five criteria for choosing one, a fair look at the main formats, and why an outside perspective can change what you see in your own business.
Every business has a slow season. For most NZ and Australian SMEs, it arrives somewhere between January and March — after the Q4 rush, before the year finds its rhythm. For retail and FMCG businesses, it might be the weeks immediately after a peak trading period. For professional services, it might be the post-EOFY lull. Wherever the slow season sits in your calendar, most business owners treat it the same way: they survive it, they wait it out, and they pick up where they left off when trading improves.
The owners who grow fastest do something different. They build during the slow season.
The recovery mindset treats slow trading as something to get through rather than something to use. The logic is understandable — revenue is down, the team is tired from peak, cash is tighter. This isn't the time to invest in growth, the thinking goes. This is the time to recover.
The problem is that the recovery mindset produces a business that peaks at the same level every cycle. The constraints that limited last peak's performance — the bottleneck in fulfilment, the unreliable supplier, the team member who couldn't handle the volume, the system that broke under pressure — are still there when the next peak arrives. Because the slow season was spent recovering, not rebuilding.
Research from Bain and Company on SME growth patterns consistently shows that the businesses that outperform their peers over five-year periods share one structural habit: they use downtime to address the constraints that peak trading reveals, rather than waiting for the next crisis to force the fix.
The Off-Season Build Plan converts slow trading into a structured growth investment. It has three phases:
1. Fix the bottleneck from last peak — the one thing that broke, delayed, or embarrassed the business at the busiest point, addressed properly instead of patched under pressure.
2. Train for the next peak, not the current one — use the lower-pressure period to properly onboard and cross-train staff, not just cover shifts.
3. Renegotiate and rebuild supplier and pricing terms — the leverage conversations that are impossible to have properly when you're at capacity.
“You make success tangible. Help me go from a wish to reality. Now have clarity of purpose and belief. You made tripling the size of my business go from seeming impossible to really possible.”
— Lina, Good Gravy
The Off-Season Build Plan requires one thing that the recovery mindset makes hard: the discipline to invest when revenue is lower. This is counterintuitive. It feels wrong to spend on systems and training when cashflow is tight. But the alternative — arriving at next peak with the same constraints — is more expensive. The businesses that feel like they're always catching up are usually the ones that only invest when trading is good.
The slow season is the only time the business is quiet enough to hear what's wrong with it. Most owners use that quiet to rest. The ones who use it to rebuild compound their advantage every year.
If your business peaks at the same level every cycle, the slow season is the leverage point you're not using. Kevin works with SME and FMCG owners to turn off-season periods into compounding growth investments.
