Tell a friend you're thinking of walking away from your biggest client, launching a new product line, or finally stepping back from day-to-day operations, and you'll usually get support. Tell a good business coach the same thing, and the first response is a question: "What are you actually trying to avoid by doing that?" That question — not the encouragement — is the entire value of coaching.

Why Advice From People Who Like You Is the Least Useful Kind

Friends, family, and even well-meaning colleagues have a built-in bias: they want you to feel better, and the fastest way to do that is to validate the decision you've already half-made. Nobody close to you wants to be the person who makes you defend yourself. So the feedback loop that's supposed to sharpen your thinking instead just confirms it.

This isn't a character flaw in the people around you. It's what happens when the relationship's primary job is support rather than scrutiny. A coach's relationship has a different job — and that difference is the entire reason the coaching conversation feels different from every other conversation in an owner's week.

The Question That Changes the Conversation

A good coach doesn't accept the first version of the problem you bring in. "I need to fire my ops manager" becomes "what specifically happened last week that made this urgent, and is it about him or about a system that let this happen?" "I want to launch a second product line" becomes "is this about growth, or is it about being bored with the first one?" The question isn't there to slow you down for its own sake — it's there because the real issue is usually one layer beneath the one you walked in with, and nobody finds that layer by themselves under deadline pressure.

This is uncomfortable in a way encouragement never is. It's also the difference between a decision you make because it felt right in the moment and a decision you can actually defend six months later.

Coaching Is Uncomfortable by Design

If every session with your coach feels affirming and easy, something's wrong — either the coach isn't doing their job, or you've unconsciously trained them to avoid the questions that sting. The value in the relationship is directly proportional to how willing the coach is to ask the question you were hoping nobody would ask, and how willing you are to actually sit with the answer instead of deflecting it.

Owners who get the most out of coaching aren't the ones who arrive with the best-prepared answers. They're the ones who show up willing to be wrong about something they were sure of twenty minutes earlier.

What This Looks Like in Practice

In the Simple-Growth System™, every session starts with the same discipline: before we solve the problem you brought in, we test whether it's the real problem. That single habit — pausing to ask what's actually underneath the decision — has changed more outcomes for the SME owners I work with than any tactic or template ever has, because it catches the expensive mistakes before they're made instead of cleaning them up after.

When did someone last ask you the question you were hoping to avoid? If it's been a while, that's usually the sign a business is running on assumptions nobody's tested. Get in touch with Kevin D'Ambros-Smith to find out what coaching inside the Simple-Growth System™ actually looks like.
