The Readiness Gap: Why Only 6% of SME Owners Feel Ready to Grow

A new 2026 survey of 500 UK SME decision-makers set out to measure growth readiness, and found almost none of it. Only 6% of SME owners feel confident and ready to grow. 37% describe their business as struggling or under significant pressure. Read past the headline number and the real story isn't the economy — it's what separates the 6% from everyone else living through exactly the same conditions.

> Only 6% of SME owners feel confident and ready to grow. 37% report struggling or under significant pressure. Businesses can only confidently plan major investment seven months ahead on average — and just 14% can see past twelve months.

What the survey actually found

grenke's "Renewed Lease of Life 2026" report surveyed 500 UK SME decision-makers and found five barriers dominating the growth conversation: energy costs (76%), reduced or unpredictable customer demand (66%), cashflow pressures (59%), regulatory burdens (58%), and access to finance (55%). Separately, 85% of respondents are currently experiencing cashflow pressure, and 83% say financing issues have caused their business to stagnate outright. Hiring has been hit hardest by this — 34% of businesses — followed by new product launches and market expansion, at 23% each. The businesses in this survey aren't short on ambition. They're short on the conditions and the systems to act on it.

The barriers are real — and they're also a distraction

None of this is exaggerated. Energy costs, demand volatility, cashflow strain, regulation, and finance access are genuinely harder right now than they were a few years ago. But notice what all five have in common: every SME owner in this survey is trading in the same energy market, the same regulatory environment, and the same finance conditions as every other owner in it. A shared barrier can explain the general mood of a whole sector. It cannot explain why 6% of businesses facing those exact conditions still feel ready to grow while 94% don't. Owners get stuck when they treat the barrier list as the full explanation for stalled growth. It isn't. It's the weather everyone is standing in — not the reason some businesses are dressed for it and others aren't.

Readiness isn't a feeling. It's infrastructure.

"Ready" is usually treated as something an owner arrives at — a confidence level they'll reach once costs settle, demand steadies, or finance gets easier. That day doesn't come, which is exactly why only 6% report feeling it. The businesses in that 6% didn't wait for external conditions to improve. They built three things that work regardless of which barrier is loudest this quarter: cash they can see 90 days out instead of just this month's bank balance, a pricing review cadence that keeps margin intact when costs move instead of absorbing every increase silently, and a decision structure that doesn't route every call through one exhausted owner. None of those three require the economy to cooperate. All three are entirely within an owner's control, which is exactly why they're the more useful place to spend energy than waiting on the other five.

Why FMCG owners feel this hardest

FMCG owners sit closer to every one of these five barriers than almost anyone else in the survey. Energy costs hit manufacturing, cold chain, and logistics directly, not just the office electricity bill. Retailer payment terms of 60 to 90 days stretch cashflow at the exact moment suppliers want paying faster. Demand volatility shows up as delistings and private-label competition, often with weeks of notice rather than a slow decline. Regulatory burden means food safety, packaging, and labelling compliance stacked on top of everything else. FMCG owners are more exposed to all five barriers simultaneously than most other SME sectors — which makes the systems argument sharper, not weaker. The external conditions genuinely can't be controlled. The internal response to them can.

Three questions that test your own readiness

  • Do you know your cash position 90 days out — not just what's in the account today?
  • Has your pricing been reviewed against actual cost changes in the last quarter, or is it still set from when costs were lower?
  • Could three major decisions happen in the business this month without going through you personally?

If the answer to any of those is no, that's the barrier worth building a system around — before chasing more growth on top of a business that isn't yet built to carry it.

This is exactly what I build with SME and FMCG owners inside the Simple-Growth System™ — not motivation, not another strategy day, but the operating infrastructure that makes "ready" a fact instead of a feeling.

Only 6% of SME owners feel ready to grow. The other 94% aren't missing confidence — they're missing the system.
