There is no single best business coach in the USA. Here are five criteria for choosing one, a fair look at the main formats, and why an outside perspective can change what you see in your own business.

The first ninety days of coaching are almost always productive — new structure, new accountability, quick wins that were sitting there waiting to be picked up. Then, around month six, a lot of engagements quietly plateau. Understanding why is more useful than pretending it doesn't happen.

The easy wins run out first

Early coaching wins tend to come from low-hanging fruit: a missing KPI, an undisciplined meeting cadence, a decision nobody had made simply because nobody had been asked to make it. Those get fixed fast and feel like real progress, because they are. But they're also finite. Once they're resolved, the harder work — the structural stuff, the owner's own habits, the parts of the business the owner has been quietly avoiding — is what's left, and it's slower and far less immediately gratifying.

Comfort becomes the new resistance

By month six, the relationship with the coach is comfortable. That comfort is exactly what can quietly reduce the challenge in the room. A coach who has become a friendly weekly check-in instead of an accountability structure has stopped doing the job, even if the conversations still feel productive and pleasant. The owner walks away liking the session more and being changed by it less — and that trade is easy to miss from the inside.

What keeps an engagement accelerating past month six

The engagements that keep compounding past the six-month mark share a pattern: the goals get harder and more specific as time goes on, not softer; the coach is willing to name what isn't working even when it's uncomfortable to say out loud; and the accountability structure — dated commitments, checked weekly, no exceptions — never lapses back into open-ended conversation. If your coaching sessions have started to feel like a nice chat rather than a working session with real consequences for not following through, that's the wall, and it's worth naming out loud rather than drifting past it.

Ask the harder question at month six, not month eighteen

The best moment to reset an engagement's intensity is the moment it starts to plateau, not a year later when the owner has quietly stopped expecting much from it and the retainer has become habit rather than investment. That means checking in explicitly, on the calendar, not just when it feels overdue: is this still driving change, or has it become routine?

If your coaching relationship has started to feel comfortable instead of challenging, that's worth a direct conversation. Recalibrating engagements before they plateau is built into how the Simple-Growth System™ runs — get in touch with Kevin D'Ambros-Smith.
