There is no single best business coach in the USA. Here are five criteria for choosing one, a fair look at the main formats, and why an outside perspective can change what you see in your own business.

The most common objection to hiring a business coach has nothing to do with money. It is the quiet belief that “I'm smart enough to have figured this out already.” That belief is exactly why the smartest owners in the room often have the biggest blind spots — and the ones most likely to correct them are the ones willing to admit they exist.

The Smartest Person in the Room Problem

Being intelligent and experienced does not protect a founder from blind spots. It often creates them. The longer you have run a business your own way, the more your own instincts feel like proven fact rather than one perspective among many — and the less likely anyone around you is to challenge it. Staff will not correct the owner. Family will not, either. The higher the intelligence and the longer the track record, the harder it becomes to see the pattern from inside it.

The named enemy is not stupidity. It is certainty — the specific, well-earned confidence of someone who has built something real, mistaken for proof that their current approach cannot be improved. Every founder who has hit a genuine growth ceiling has hit it while still believing, quite reasonably, that they were doing everything right.

The Blind Spot Audit

You cannot see your own blind spots by definition — that is what makes them blind spots. But you can build a structured way to find them.

1. Ask three people who will actually tell you the truth — Not your team, who have a reason to be diplomatic. A peer, a mentor, or a coach with no stake in protecting your feelings. Ask specifically: “What am I not seeing?”

2. Look at what you refuse to measure — The number you avoid tracking is usually telling you something. If you do not know your true cost per customer, or your real margin by product line, that avoidance is itself the blind spot.

3. Find the advice you have dismissed twice — If two unrelated, credible people have suggested the same change and you rejected it both times, that pattern is worth more scrutiny than either piece of advice on its own.

Why Smart Owners Wait Longest to Get Help

The real obstacle is not that smart owners cannot see the value in coaching. It is that admitting they need an outside perspective feels, to them, like admitting the intelligence that built the business so far was not enough. That is the wrong way to frame it. The businesses that have sat in boardrooms alongside McDonald's, Samsung, and IBM did not get there by having leaders who assumed they had nothing left to learn — they got there by building in structured, outside challenge as a permanent habit, not a one-off fix for when things go wrong.

A good coach does not replace an owner's intelligence. They aim it at the blind spots that intelligence alone cannot see.

Quick Wins This Week

  • Ask one trusted person, today, “What am I not seeing in this business?” — and actually write down the answer.
  • Identify the one number in your business you consistently avoid looking at closely.
  • Reconsider the last piece of advice you dismissed twice from two unrelated sources.

Key Takeaways

  • Recognise that intelligence and experience can create blind spots, not just protect against them.
  • Ask someone with no stake in your feelings what you are not seeing.
  • Track the number you have been avoiding — it is usually the tell.
  • Revisit advice you have dismissed more than once before assuming it was wrong.

Kevin works personally with a select group of SME owners to build the outside challenge their own intelligence can't provide on its own.
