There is no single best business coach in the USA. Here are five criteria for choosing one, a fair look at the main formats, and why an outside perspective can change what you see in your own business.

Ask most SME owners what happens if they take a genuine month off, and you'll get a pause before the answer. That pause is the answer. If the business needs you in the room to keep functioning, you haven't built a business — you've built a very demanding job.

Why "it's all in my head" doesn't scale

Founders default to holding process knowledge personally because it's faster than writing it down — right up until the team grows past the point where that's sustainable. Every process that lives only in your head is a process that breaks the moment you're unavailable, and a process your team can't improve because they don't fully understand it either. It also means every new hire learns your business by trial and error instead of by a system, which is slower and less consistent every single time.

What actually counts as a system

A real SOP isn't a paragraph in an onboarding doc nobody reopens. It answers three things clearly: the exact steps in order, who owns each step, and what "done correctly" looks like so quality doesn't depend on who's doing it that day. A good test: if a new hire can't follow it without asking you a clarifying question, it isn't finished yet. For an FMCG business, that might be the exact sequence for onboarding a new retail account, the checklist for a stock-take, or the escalation path when a delivery is going to miss its window.

Start with what breaks first when you're away

Don't try to document everything at once — that project never finishes, and most owners abandon it in the first month. Start with the handful of processes that would cause visible damage within a week if you disappeared: order fulfilment, customer escalations, cash collection, whatever touches revenue or customer trust directly. Document those first, hand them to someone else to run, then actually test them by stepping away and seeing what breaks. Expand the list from there, one process at a time.

The real payoff isn't the time off

The point isn't the holiday, though that matters too. It's that a business that runs on documented systems is a business that can be delegated to, scaled, and eventually sold for what it's actually worth — because its value doesn't disappear the moment you do. Buyers and investors price founder-dependency as risk. Every system you document is, quite literally, value you're adding to the business beyond this month's revenue.

Could your business actually survive a month without you in it? Building the systems that make the answer "yes" is core to the Simple-Growth System™ — get in touch with Kevin D'Ambros-Smith to find out what breaks first.
