There is no single best business coach in the USA. Here are five criteria for choosing one, a fair look at the main formats, and why an outside perspective can change what you see in your own business.
Most SME sales teams are sitting on a revenue lever they've never pulled: the customer who already said yes. Existing customers are 60-70% more likely to buy from you again than a new prospect is to buy from you for the first time, and businesses that upsell and cross-sell effectively see, on average, 42% more revenue from the customers they already have, according to data compiled by WiserNotify. And yet walk into most SME sales conversations and the transaction ends the second the primary item is agreed. Nobody asks the second question. That single missing question is the upsell you're leaving on the table.
This is the excuse every SME owner reaches for, and it's built on a misunderstanding of what upselling actually is when it's done properly. Pushy is offering something irrelevant to hit a target. Useful is noticing what a customer actually needs and mentioning it before they have to ask. Retailers who add the complementary product at the counter, tradies who flag the maintenance plan before they leave the job, consultants who scope the next phase before the invoice is sent — none of these feel pushy to the customer, because the offer is relevant and timed to the moment they're already committed. 72% of salespeople report their revenue grew specifically because they added upselling and cross-selling into their normal sales process. It isn't a trick. It's a habit most SME teams simply never built.
You don't need a new product line. You need one question, asked consistently, at the right moment.
1. Identify the natural pair — for every core product or service you sell, name the one thing that genuinely goes with it. Not the highest-margin add-on. The one that actually helps the customer.
2. Script the moment, not the pitch — decide exactly when in the transaction the question gets asked. Too early and it feels like upselling before trust is earned; too late and the moment's gone.
3. Make it a question, not an offer — "Most people who buy this also need X — want me to add it?" outperforms "would you like to add X?" because it signals normal behaviour, not a sales tactic.
4. Track the take rate — if you don't measure how often the add-on question is asked and accepted, you can't tell whether the team is actually doing it or just agreeing to in the meeting.
"Kevin doesn't just present — he electrifies the room and drives massive, real-world value! He drops game-changing insights and actionable shortcuts that show businesses exactly how to turn everyday customers into raving, loyal fans — and acquire new ones faster than ever thought possible."
— Gareth Bayliss, Sales Manager, The Icehouse
Ask any sales team if they should be upselling and every hand goes up. Watch them on the floor and the question disappears the moment the pressure's on to close the primary sale fast. The real obstacle isn't skill — it's that nobody has made the add-on question as non-negotiable as the closing question. Sales teams do what gets checked, not what gets said in the Monday meeting. This is where a coach or a sales manager who actually reviews live calls, not just the numbers afterward, changes behaviour that no amount of training alone will shift.
If your team is closing the sale and stopping there, there's real revenue sitting in the conversation you're not having.
