There is no single best business coach in the USA. Here are five criteria for choosing one, a fair look at the main formats, and why an outside perspective can change what you see in your own business.
Most SME owners call a coach the way they call a plumber: only once something's visibly broken. By the time the call happens, the coach spends the first few months stopping the bleeding instead of building anything new. If you're wondering whether a business coach is worth it, the honest answer depends entirely on when you bring one in, not whether you eventually will. Kevin D'Ambros-Smith has coached over two hundred businesses one-on-one since 2017, from seven-figure operators to companies turning over $100 million a year, and the clients who get the most out of coaching are almost never the ones who called in a crisis.
The enemy here is treating a coach like a fire extinguisher instead of a gym membership: something you reach for only when things are already going wrong. It's an understandable instinct, asking for help when the numbers look fine feels unnecessary, even a little indulgent. But waiting for the wobble means the coaching relationship starts in triage: stabilising cash, patching a churn problem, calming a team, before any actual growth work can begin.
SCORE, the largest US network of volunteer business mentors, found that mentored small businesses were 12 percent more likely to still be in business after one year than the national average, and that entrepreneurs with access to a mentor were five times more likely to start a business in the first place. The gains from outside guidance compound earliest. They don't wait for the business to be in trouble before they start.
Here's the simplest way to see the difference. Picture two identical businesses calling a coach on the same day, through two different doors.
“Kevin is a master of his craft. From creating and facilitating high-impact 'Grow Your Business in 1-Day' workshops to elite sessions for our flagship Owner Manager Programme, Kevin delivers excellence across the board. He is a powerhouse presenter and facilitator who brings an explosive blend of energy and expertise to every room he steps into.”

Owners doing well rarely feel an urgent reason to bring in outside help, because nothing is visibly on fire. That's precisely the problem: the biggest compounding years of a coaching relationship are the ones spent building before a wobble forces the issue, not after. Waiting for a bad quarter to justify the investment means giving up the years where the advice would have done the most good.
This is where an experienced outside voice is worth the most, not the least: someone who has built and sold nine companies and sat in boardrooms at global brands can see, in a single session, which part of a currently-successful business is quietly fragile, well before any number on the profit and loss statement says so.
The owners who build the biggest moat around their growth are the ones who bring in help before they need it, not after.
