There is no single best business coach in the USA. Here are five criteria for choosing one, a fair look at the main formats, and why an outside perspective can change what you see in your own business.

Most SME owners believe they lose customers over price. New international research says otherwise. Zendesk's CX Trends 2026 report, more than 11,000 consumers and customer experience leaders surveyed across 22 countries and released in November 2025, found that 85 percent of CX leaders say one unresolved issue is enough to lose a customer for good. Not a discount war. Not a flashier competitor. One dropped ball.

Here is the number that should sting more: 86 percent of consumers say responsiveness and getting their issue properly resolved is what actually drives their purchase decisions, ahead of price, ahead of loyalty points, ahead of whatever your marketing is promising this quarter.

The Price Excuse

"They found it cheaper" is the easiest explanation an owner can give themselves for a lost customer. It is also, according to this data, usually wrong, or at least incomplete. Price is the story a customer tells you on the way out the door. The unresolved email, the slow callback, the second time they had to explain their problem from scratch, that is the story underneath it.

The same Zendesk research found 67 percent of consumers now expect a business to remember their prior interactions and tailor support accordingly. Not "nice to have." Expect. If your team, or your systems, cannot recall what happened last time a customer called, you are quietly teaching every customer that they are starting from zero each time, and that nothing they have already told you matters.

This matters more for an SME than for a big-box competitor, because you do not have the marketing budget to out-shout a bad experience. Big brands can paper over a dropped ball with another ad. You cannot. Which makes this one of the few genuine competitive advantages left to a smaller business, if you build it deliberately.

The Loyalty Leak Audit

Here is a three-part framework to find the leak before you reach for a discount.

1. The Unresolved Issue Check. Pull the last ten customers you lost. For each one, trace back thirty days before they left, was there a complaint, a slow reply, or a dropped ball that never got properly closed out? Most owners running this for the first time are surprised how many "price" losses were actually "we never heard back" losses.

2. The Response Clock. Set one measurable response-time standard, same day, four hours, whatever is realistic for your business, and track it. Not as a vibe. As a number on a dashboard, reviewed weekly. What gets measured gets fixed; what does not get measured quietly drifts.

3. The Memory Test. Can anyone on your team pull up what happened last time this customer contacted you, in under thirty seconds? If the answer depends on which staff member picks up the phone, you do not have a system, you have luck, and luck does not scale.

None of this requires a bigger marketing budget. It requires deciding that responsiveness is a system, not a personality trait of whoever is having a good day.

Gareth Bayliss, Sales Manager at The Icehouse, has seen this play out with Kevin directly:

"Kevin assists businesses to understand their 'Secret Sauce' and implements a strategy to grow the company's brand and in turn, business opportunities. His guidance and strategic advice is always well thought through and gets fantastic outcomes."

— Gareth Bayliss, Sales Manager, The Icehouse

The Execution Gap

Most owners already know this, in the sense that nobody would argue against "we should resolve issues faster." Knowing it is not the problem. The problem is that nobody owns it. Response time lives in the gap between whoever is at the front desk, whoever is checking email, and the owner, who only finds out about the dropped ball once the customer has already walked. Without a tracked standard and someone accountable for it, "we should be more responsive" stays a value instead of becoming a system. This is precisely the gap a structured coaching relationship exists to close, not motivation, a build.

Quick Wins You Can Run Today

Three things to do before the week is out: run the Unresolved Issue Check on your last ten lost customers. Pick one response-time standard and tell your team today, out loud. Call your five best customers and ask them directly what almost made them leave, the honest answer will tell you more than any survey.

Key Takeaways

  • Most "we lost them on price" stories are actually "we lost them on an unresolved issue" stories wearing a price excuse
  • 85 percent of CX leaders say a single unresolved issue is enough to lose a customer, per Zendesk's CX Trends 2026 research, 11,000-plus respondents across 22 countries, released November 2025
  • 86 percent of consumers rank responsiveness and resolution above price in their purchase decisions
  • 67 percent expect a business to remember prior interactions, treat this as the baseline, not the bonus
  • Build responsiveness as a measured system, a tracked response-time standard with a named owner, not a hope

Want a second set of eyes on where your own loyalty leak is hiding? That is exactly what the first Simple-Growth session is built to find.
