Most sales training focuses on the pitch and the close. The call is usually already lost in the first five minutes. Here's the agenda-set and diagnostic sequence that fixes it — at the team level, not just for one rep.
Ask most owners what happens to their business the day they're not there, and you'll get a long pause before an answer that starts with "well, I guess...". Gallup's March 2025 survey of US business owners found 33 percent have no long-term plan for their business beyond themselves, and once you add the 22 percent who simply plan to close it down, 55 percent of owners have no real continuity plan at all. That's not just a retirement problem. It's a today problem, because the same gap shows up every time you're sick, on a plane, or finally taking the break you've earned.
Most owners file "what happens without me" under distant estate-planning questions rather than today's operating risk. Gallup's research, drawn from 1,264 US business owners, shows just how common that blind spot is. But the real test isn't who inherits the business in twenty years. It's whether the business could run for two weeks, right now, without a single text message to you.
You don't need a five-year succession document to start closing this gap. You need one deliberate test:
"Kevin has simplified a lot of the processes that have been floating in my head. It has made things easier to navigate as we begin to launch a new service offering to the market. I feel confident and able to do this, thanks to Kevin."
— Estelle Kruse
Documenting a decision and handing it off always feels slower than just making the call yourself, so "I'll write it up once things calm down" becomes the quiet default. Things never calm down. This is where accountability matters more than willpower: a coach who makes sure the trip actually happens, the list actually gets written, and the authority actually gets handed over, instead of letting the test slip to "next quarter" again.
If the thought of two weeks off makes your stomach drop, you can close that gap, and Kevin will work through it with you.
Be the owner who takes the trip and comes back to a business that kept running without you.
