Most SME owners treat pricing as a set-and-forget cost calculation. Here's why price is actually the highest-leverage growth lever in your business — and the three-number method for testing whether you're underpriced.
Score's small business data suggests only around a third of seasonal businesses hold cash reserves that cover their three leanest operating months before the slow season hits — which means roughly two-thirds walk into it under-reserved. If you're heading into a big NZ summer trading run, or the US holiday rush, your cash test matters more right now than any sales forecast on the wall.
The enemy is growth measured only by the top line, while the cash underneath it quietly thins. A 2026 review of US small business cash flow data found 40% of businesses can't cover a $10,000 unexpected expense without borrowing, and 55% hold under 30 days of cash reserves at any given time. A strong sales quarter can mask a genuinely fragile cash position right up until the moment it can't.
"Kevin came in and spoke with great passion and knowledge. We went away with so many great ideas we wanted to implement. It was a fantastic presentation — we were hanging on every word."

The owners who are best at growing revenue are often the same owners who are most uncomfortable asking a blunt cash question of their own business — it feels like doubting the growth they've just worked hard to create. That discomfort is exactly where an outside advisor earns their fee: asking the ten-minute question the owner has been quietly avoiding, before the season forces the answer on them anyway.
If you haven't run your ten-minute reserve check for this season yet, you can work through it with Kevin before peak trade starts.
Be the owner who walks into the slow season already knowing your cash covers it.
