Management Capability Development funding can cover up to half of one-to-one business training for eligible NZ businesses. Here is who qualifies, what it covers, what it does not, and the order to do things in.
An owner Kevin worked with once proudly showed him his action list from three months of coaching — every item ticked off, right on schedule. His business hadn't moved. He'd done everything asked of him and changed nothing about how he actually ran the place. That's the difference between compliance and accountability, and it's the gap that quietly makes a lot of coaching engagements feel productive while producing almost nothing real.
The enemy is compliance dressed up as accountability. Compliance is doing the specific task you were assigned — send the email, update the pricing sheet, have the conversation with the underperforming staff member. Accountability is the underlying behaviour actually changing so that next time, you don't need to be assigned the task at all. An owner can complete every action on a list and still delegate the same way, avoid the same hard conversations, and make the same pricing decisions out of fear that got them into coaching in the first place — because the list measured task completion, not behaviour change.
This is easy for both coach and client to miss, because tick-box progress feels good and looks good in a report. It's much harder, and much more valuable, to track whether the pattern underneath the task is actually different.
Here's the distinction Kevin builds into every coaching relationship, and the one worth asking yourself even outside a formal coaching engagement:
1. Name the task — what did you actually do? (Had the conversation, sent the proposal, changed the pricing.)
2. Name the pattern it was meant to break — what old habit or avoidance was this task designed to interrupt? Be specific — "I avoid giving direct feedback" not "I need to communicate better."
3. Test it without the assignment — the next time that same situation comes up, unprompted, do you do the new thing on your own, or do you wait to be told again?
4. If you waited — that's the real finding — not a failure, just the actual data point. It means the task got done but the pattern hasn't shifted yet, and that's what the next session needs to address, not a new task list.
Accountability that only measures completed tasks will always look better than accountability that measures whether anything underneath has actually changed. The second one is harder to track and the only one that matters.
"Kevin had a no-nonsense approach and tackled the issues head on. Accountability was the key."
— Ashley Berrysmith, Icehouse Coaching Programme
Most owners genuinely want to change, and most coaches genuinely want to help — so both sides default to the version of progress that's easiest to see and easiest to report: the completed task. Naming the underlying pattern requires an uncomfortable conversation about why the task needed assigning in the first place, and that conversation gets skipped in favour of moving on to the next item. It's not laziness on anyone's part — it's the path of least resistance, and least resistance rarely produces real change.
The fix isn't a better list. It's a coach willing to ask "would you have done this without me asking?" — and an owner willing to sit with the honest answer instead of rushing past it to the next task.
If your coaching or your own self-discipline has produced a lot of ticked boxes and not much actual change, that's the first thing Kevin fixes with you.
...and you become the owner whose habits change, not just your task list.
