SME owner confidence is climbing, but for most, revenue isn't following. Here's why time isn't your real constraint, and the three-step framework that finds the one that is.

Short answer: Choose an EOS Implementer if your leadership team needs one shared operating system and weekly discipline. Choose an ActionCOACH franchise coach if you want a structured, regular coaching rhythm with a local or online coach. Choose an independent coach if you need deep, flexible work on one specific growth constraint. Many owners combine an operating system with an outside coach.

US owners looking for outside help meet these three options early, and the names blur together. This guide describes each one fairly, using their own websites, and ends with a six-question test you can apply to any of them. Where a fact could not be confirmed, it was left out.

What does an EOS Implementer do?

EOS, the Entrepreneurial Operating System, is a set of simple tools for running a company. An EOS Implementer is a trained facilitator who teaches those tools to your leadership team. According to EOS Worldwide, the focus is on helping leadership teams improve across six components: Vision, People, Data, Issues, Process and Traction. EOS also says the aim is for the team to run the system on its own, with the Implementer "getting out of their way". One EOS article says EOS has more than 900 Implementers worldwide.

If you want to look before you commit, EOS says you can request a 90-minute meeting where an Implementer explains how EOS could help. EOS is open about the fit too: it says EOS and business coaching "often go hand in hand".

What do you get from an ActionCOACH coach?

ActionCOACH began in Brisbane, Australia, under founder Brad Sugars, and grew by franchising the coaching model. Its own website says it has more than 1,000 coaches in over 70 countries. Each coach is an independent franchise owner, so the structure comes from the ActionCOACH system while the experience depends on the person you sit with.

ActionCOACH says its pricing varies with your needs and depends on whether you choose weekly, fortnightly or monthly coaching. It also says no long-term contracts are required and offers a complimentary initial consultation. No fee is published, so ask your local coach for the full terms in writing.

What does an independent coach offer?

An independent coach is not tied to a single system, so the work can follow your business rather than a curriculum. That flexibility cuts both ways. There is no shared brand standard, so you need to check track record, references and fit for yourself. The quality of the questions they ask in the first conversation tells you a lot.

There is also the value of distance. When you are surrounded by the same conferences, books and competitors, it gets hard to see what is obvious from the outside. A coach who has worked across many industries brings ideas your competitors are not hearing.

How do you decide? Six questions to ask

Answer these before you talk to anyone. The pattern of your answers points to the right format.

  • Is your biggest problem inside the leadership team (alignment, accountability, meetings), or outside it (finding and keeping customers)? Inside points to an operating system; outside points to a growth-focused coach.
  • Do you want a framework your team will learn and own, or a thinking partner focused on your numbers?
  • Do you want a fixed, regular rhythm of sessions, or flexibility to go deep when a problem demands it?
  • Will your senior team commit time to workshops, or is this mainly one-on-one with you?
  • Has the provider shown you how they make money, and given you the full fee schedule in writing?
  • Can you speak to current or past clients of the person who would actually work with you?

Where does an outside coach add something different?

Operating systems run the business you have. They are very good at that. A growth coach works on the market for it: who your best customers are, why they choose you and how to reach more of them. The two jobs are different, which is why they combine well.

Kevin D'Ambros-Smith is a business coach and advisor who has coached 200+ businesses one-on-one across 30+ industries, after a career at DDB, Ogilvy and Saatchi and Saatchi and founding nine companies. He works with US owners online. His approach is to find the real constraint first, then fix it, before you spend another dollar on marketing, hiring or software.

"Kevin understood a manufacturing and trades business from day one. No jargon, no theory, just clear advice on where to focus so that we had clear targets and ideas we could act on straight away to improve our customer acquisition and engagement."

Heidi Johnston, Windowmakers

Can you use more than one?

Yes. EOS itself says the two often go hand in hand. A typical pattern is an operating system for team discipline plus an outside coach for growth. If you are not sure which kind of help you need first, the short questionnaire at Simple-Growth is a good place to start.

FAQ

Is an EOS Implementer a business coach?

EOS describes the roles as different but complementary. An Implementer teaches a complete operating system to your leadership team, while a coach often focuses on one area of the business. EOS says the two often go hand in hand.

Does ActionCOACH require a long contract?

ActionCOACH says on its website that no long-term commitments or contracts are required. Confirm the terms with your coach in writing before you start.

How much does each option cost?

Neither EOS Implementers nor ActionCOACH publish a standard fee on the pages reviewed for this guide, so none is quoted here. Ask for a full written fee schedule and divide the annual total by the sessions you will actually use.

Which is best for a small team?

It depends on the constraint. If the team is misaligned, an operating system can help. If sales and customer growth are the problem, a growth-focused coach is usually the better first step.

Can I work with a coach online across US time zones?

Yes. Kevin works with US owners online, and the free 30-minute call runs across US time zones.
