Reps close 2.9x more deals at month-end and lose 11.4x more margin doing it, one major study found. Here's why the plan is the problem, not the rep, and three fixes.
Short answer: AI makes whatever you point it at faster. If you point it at the link in your business that is not the constraint, you get a faster version of the same problem and a new subscription to pay for. Find the one link that limits everything else first, then choose the AI job that touches that link.
You are working hard, growth has stalled, and every week brings another AI tool that promises to fix it. This guide connects two things we publish separately: the eight-link check for finding your real constraint and our hub on how a small business can use AI to grow.
Because speed multiplies. If your real constraint is slow follow-up and you use AI to produce twice as much marketing, you now generate twice the enquiries into the same leak. If your real constraint is delivery capacity, a faster sales message just books work you cannot deliver.
The scale of adoption makes this a live question. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce 2026 Empowering Small Business report, based on 3,732 US small businesses surveyed in July and August 2026, found 66% now use AI, up from 58% in 2025 and 23% in 2023. The most common uses among those businesses were marketing and promotions (41%), improving the customer experience (35%), accounting (31%) and managing customer relationships (31%). Those uses cluster around the front of the business. If your constraint sits somewhere else, that is where most owners are pointing the tool, and it may not be where yours should go. The report is self-reported survey data and shows who uses AI, not whether it fixed their weak link.
Score your eight links from 1 to 5, as set out in the 8-link growth chain. Then match your lowest link to a first AI job. Treat this as a starting hypothesis. Your numbers decide.
In his Making It Happen training, Kevin D'Ambros-Smith tells of a mortgage brokerage that mapped its customer journey and found the leak: evenings spent visiting clients without payslips or with a poor credit history. Moving document upload and a questionnaire online before the meeting was booked took worthwhile meetings from about 50% to about 95%. Technology did the work, but only after someone found where the process was leaking. That is the order to follow with AI too: diagnose, then deploy.
Run a 14-day test on your weakest link. Name the number that proves it is weak, choose one AI job from the list above, run it with a person checking every output, and compare the number at day 14. Our guide to breaking a constraint in 14 days without new spend sets out the steps. If the number moves, keep the job. If it does not, you have learned what not to buy, and that is the cheapest lesson in the book.
To measure honestly whether a job is saving time or only feeling efficient, read The AI productivity test. And if you are wondering why AI assistants never mention your business when owners ask for a recommendation, see why ChatGPT has never heard of your business.
No. Find the constraint first, then choose the AI job that touches it. Buying first means you may speed up a link that was never the problem.
It depends on your weakest link. For many owners it is drafting same-day replies and follow-up, because slow follow-up is a common leak and the output is easy to check.
Pick one number before you start, such as reply time or hours saved, and compare it after 14 to 30 days. If the number has not moved, change the job or the brief before you change the tool.
Yes. An outside view helps because owners often score the links they control generously and the ones they dislike harshly. Kevin offers a free 30-minute call.
