Kevin D’Ambros-Smith coaching and presenting to business owners

AI for small businessA practical way to use AI without losing a year to the wrong tool. How can my small business use AI to grow? Point it at the real constraint.

Find the weak link first. Then give AI one job that touches it.

Written by Kevin D’Ambros-Smith, Founder, Simple-Growth. Updated 29 October 2026.

The short answer

A small business uses AI to grow by giving it one repetitive, checkable job that sits next to its real constraint, then tracking one number for 30 days. Owners who start with the tool stay busy. Owners who start with the weak link get time back. Kevin D’Ambros-Smith’s Simple-Growth method finds that link first, picks the AI job that touches it, and keeps the decisions that define the business with you.

You want your time back, not another tool to manage.

You started your business for income, time, freedom, or all three. Now there is a new AI tool every week, a pile of advice about prompts, and a quiet worry that you are falling behind. Meanwhile your enquiries still wait for a reply, your quotes still go quiet, and Sunday night still disappears into admin.

The villain here is not AI, and it is not you. It is aiming a powerful tool at the wrong target. AI makes whatever you point it at faster, so pointed at a link that is not your constraint it gives you a faster version of the same problem plus a subscription. Our guide to finding your real business constraint is where this starts.

On the other side of this page: you know which one job to hand to AI first, you know the number that proves it works, and you spend the hours you win back on the work only the owner can do.

Read together, the reports point to a start-here problem rather than an awareness problem. Surveys show who uses AI, not whether it fixed their weakest link, so treat the figures as context and let your own numbers decide.

How do you roll AI out without wasting a quarter?

Big brands diagnose before they deploy. You can do the same at small-business scale in four steps.

What does Kevin teach about technology and AI?

In his Making It Happen training, Kevin tells of a mortgage brokerage that mapped its customer journey and found it was spending evenings visiting clients with no payslips or a poor credit history. Moving document upload and a short questionnaire online before the meeting was booked took the share of worthwhile meetings from about 50% to about 95%. Technology paid because someone found the leak first.

He also tells of a client who received an abusive complaint, used ChatGPT to draft a calm reply, and had the customer apologise. A person still read and sent it. Kevin’s line for owners: AI is not going to take your job, the person using AI is.

What to keep for yourself: who you serve, what you charge, who you hire and what you stand for. Check a tool’s data terms before customer details go in, because MBIE’s research lists accuracy, privacy, security and trust among the concerns holding SMEs back. Questions owners ask.

How can a small business use AI to grow?

Give AI one repetitive, checkable job that sits next to your real constraint, such as same-day follow-up or first drafts of marketing, then track one number for 30 days. Keep the decisions about who you serve, what you charge and who you hire for yourself.

What should a small business use AI for first?

Start with the job closest to your weakest link that repeats weekly and that you can check in about a minute. For many owners that is drafting replies and follow-up to enquiries.

How many small businesses use AI?

In the US, the Chamber of Commerce 2026 report found 66% of small businesses use AI. In New Zealand, the MYOB Business Monitor reported in August 2026 that 36% of SMEs proactively use AI: 30% of businesses with one to five employees and 64% of those with 20 or more.

Is it safe to put customer information into an AI tool?

Check the tool’s data terms first and avoid pasting personal details you would not be comfortable having stored. When in doubt, remove names and account details before you paste.

Will AI replace my team?

The US Chamber of Commerce 2026 report found 47% of small businesses say AI is creating jobs today and 6% say it is enabling headcount reductions. Your result depends on how you use it. In his Making It Happen training, Kevin puts it this way: AI is not going to take your job, the person using AI is.

Do I need to buy expensive AI software?

Not to begin. Many owners start with a general-purpose assistant and pay for more only after one job has moved a number they care about.

How do I know if AI is working for my business?

Pick one number before you start, such as reply time or hours saved, and compare it after 14 to 30 days. If it has not moved, change the job or the brief before you change the tool.

Why do AI assistants never mention my business?

AI assistants recommend businesses they can find clear, consistent answers about. Our guide on why ChatGPT has never heard of your business sets out what to fix first.
