41% of US owners say the cash-flow gap between money in and bills out is their top stressor. Here's why better follow-up won't fix it, and the three moves that stop the chase before it starts.

It is 9pm, the kids are asleep and you are googling business coach, business consultant and business mentor in three tabs, because nobody has told you which one you actually need. Pick the wrong one and you pay for advice you cannot use. Pick none and you carry on solo, which is where most New Zealand owners already are.

The numbers explain why. Stats NZ data in MBIE's 2026 small business fact sheet shows that 97.2% of New Zealand enterprises have between 0 and 19 employees, and 74% have no employees at all. For most of you, advice has to fit one person's week, not a management team's calendar.

A disclosure first: Simple-Growth publishes this guide and Kevin D'Ambros-Smith is a business coach, so he is not neutral. That is why this explains the options instead of ranking them, and sticks to what organisations say publicly, checked on 1 November 2026.

Four Kinds Of Help, And When Each One Works

A coach asks the questions. You bring the goal, they help you find the real constraint and hold you to the next step. Best when you know your business well but are stuck, busy or alone with the decisions. Watch out for coaches who give you a generic framework before they have heard your numbers.

A consultant does a defined piece of work. A new pricing model, a systems rebuild, a marketing plan. Best when you know what you need and lack the time or skill to do it. Watch out for a report that sits in a drawer because nobody owns the implementation.

A mentor shares experience. Usually someone who has run a business, often at low cost. Business Mentors NZ, for example, says it has helped more than 85,000 owners since 1991 through 1,500+ mentors, and lists a registration fee of $295 plus GST for a 12-month mentoring journey. Best when you want a sounding board from someone who has been there. Watch out for advice that reflects one person's industry rather than yours.

A peer group puts you in a room of owners. The Icehouse, for instance, offers advisory boards alongside one-on-one coaching (its coaching runs for a minimum of three months). Best when you learn by comparing notes. Watch out for groups where you are the only one at your stage.

What It Costs, And How Funding Can Help

Most coaching and advisory providers in New Zealand, including The Icehouse and Simple-Growth, do not publish a price list, so ask for a written 12-month quote from anyone you are considering. Business Mentors NZ is the exception, with its published registration fee.

Funding is the part many owners miss. The Regional Business Partner Network's Management Capability Development Fund can cover up to 50% of one-to-one training costs, or up to 75% of group training, to a maximum of $5,000 per business each year. You need to be an established New Zealand business with fewer than 50 full-time-equivalent staff, register with the network, and have a discovery session with a regional business partner growth advisor first. The training must come from an approved provider. Kevin is an approved Regional Business Partner Network provider, so ask about eligibility for your business. The rules change, so confirm them on business.govt.nz before you commit.

Choose By Your Situation

  • You are stuck and cannot see why. A coach.
  • You know the task but cannot do it yourself. A consultant, with a clear scope and a hand-over date.
  • You want to learn from someone who has been there. A mentor.
  • You are lonely at the top. A peer group.
  • You are not sure which. Book one free conversation, and ask the provider to tell you honestly if someone else would suit you better.

This is not for you if you already know exactly what to build and simply need a contractor. In that case, brief a specialist and skip the discovery.

Five Questions To Ask Before You Commit

  • Who exactly will I work with, and what have they done in a business like mine?
  • What is the total cost for 12 months, and is any of it fundable?
  • What will be different in 90 days, and how will we measure it?
  • What do you need from me each week?
  • What would make you say this is not the right fit?

You do not have to solve the decision paralysis alone. The right kind of help makes the next 90 days feel lighter, not heavier.

A new market, a new product line, a second location: most lose money the same way, by skipping the three numbers that would have told them how big the opportunity really was.

Most people picture coaching as a conversation. The sessions that actually move a business are a loop, repeated every week, until it becomes how the owner thinks.

A forty-item to-do list with none of the three that mattered finished is not a time management problem. It is a filter problem, and the Eisenhower Matrix is the filter.

A good salesperson gets four real conversations a day. A good presentation, given once, can reach four hundred. Here is why most SME sales teams never use it.

Customers do not leave because a competitor shouted louder. They leave because, in the exact moment they needed someone, your brand was not the one they thought of.

Most SME owners track one number: the bank balance. The businesses that compound track four, using Kaplan and Norton's Balanced Scorecard, and catch the problem before it ever reaches the bank account.

If every session with your coach leaves you comfortable, that is the warning sign, not the proof it is working. Here is why direct feedback outperforms kind feedback, backed by Gallup's data.

A global survey of over 10,000 workers found trusted employees nearly twice as productive as distrusted ones. If your calendar fixes keep failing, the real constraint may be trust, not time.
