US owners lose 33 working days a year to financial worry, mostly from not knowing their numbers. Here's the 2-number Monday check that closes the gap.
You hired "a business coach" and got a mentor who tells war stories, or a consultant who wrote you a beautiful strategy document and left you to implement it alone. Neither is wrong to hire — but if you needed the other one, you just spent real money solving the wrong problem, and you probably won't realise it for months.
"Business coach" gets used as a catch-all term for three genuinely different relationships, and almost nobody explains the difference before you buy. A consultant diagnoses a problem and does the work for you — you get their expertise, delivered as an output. A mentor shares their own experience and war stories, offering perspective from having been there, but without a structured system for holding you to specific action. A coach does neither of those — a good coach builds a system of accountability and asks the questions that make you find the answer yourself, so the capability stays in the business after they leave. Hire a consultant when you need a mentor, and you'll get a beautiful plan nobody executes. Hire a mentor when you need a coach, and you'll get inspiring conversations with no measurable change three months later.
Before you hire anyone under the "business coach" banner, answer these three questions honestly:
1. Do you need the work done, or the capability built?
2. Do you need perspective, or accountability?
3. Are you hiring for comfort or for challenge?
Most SME owners actually need a blend — some consulting input, some mentoring perspective, and a coaching structure holding the whole thing together. The mistake isn't wanting all three. It's not knowing which one you're buying at the time you sign the contract.
"Kevin has been a game changer for us. I had tried a couple of high-profile US entrepreneur programs but found these just talked about 'mindset', whereas Kevin gives practical advice to grow your business that you can implement immediately."
— Brett Abeille
Most owners don't do the diagnosis before they hire, because they're solving for the general feeling of "I need help," not the specific gap causing it — and every program markets itself as the answer to everything. The businesses that actually change are the ones where the owner named the real gap first: is this a knowledge gap, a doing gap, or an accountability gap? That one distinction, made honestly before you sign anything, determines whether the next twelve months of coaching fees produce a transformed business or an expensive series of pleasant conversations.
The business owners who close this tab and keep guessing at "help" in general will be in the same place this time next year. The ones who name the actual gap won't.
...and you become the owner who hires the right kind of help for the gap you actually have.

Most SME owners know their cost per click. Almost none know their true cost to win a customer, because the real costs live in four different spreadsheets nobody has ever combined.

Ask most owners what they do and they'll answer instantly. Ask them why their business exists, beyond making money, and watch the pause. That pause is costing you customers, hires and referrals.

Ask your team to name the business's single most important goal this quarter. Five different answers from five people means you have one problem, not twelve: nobody knows what the goal actually is.
