Roughly 65 percent of small businesses are tied so closely to their owner they'd struggle to run without them. Here's Gerber's E-Myth framework for finally getting out of the technician's chair.
The short answer: Free or low-cost mentoring wins when you are early in your business and need a sounding board from someone who has been there. Paid coaching wins when you run an established business and need a written plan, outside challenge and someone holding you to it. Many NZ owners use mentoring first, then coaching once the stakes rise.
Kevin D'Ambros-Smith is an Auckland-based business coach and advisor who has coached 200+ businesses one-on-one across 30+ industries. Some of those owners tried mentoring first and some did not need to. This guide is here so you can choose with clear eyes. Facts about other providers below were read from their own websites on 26 October 2026.
A mentor shares what they learned from their own journey. You bring a question, they draw on their experience and tell you what worked for them. A coach works on your business with you: they diagnose the constraint, build a plan, set the next steps and check you did them. Mentoring is about borrowed experience. Coaching is about your plan and your follow-through.
The two overlap, and a good mentor often coaches while a good coach often mentors. The real question is not the label. It is whether you need advice on a decision, or a structured process that moves the business over the next 90 days.
More than most owners realise. The government's Business.govt.nz site lists a range of free or low-cost options for early-stage businesses, and notes that Business Mentors New Zealand pairs participants with volunteer mentors over 12 months.
Business Mentors New Zealand describes a one-off registration fee of $295 plus GST for a 12 month mentoring journey. Its website says you must be a New Zealand resident who owns a small business or social enterprise, be ready for feedback that may challenge you, and commit to the relationship. It also says it has over 1,500 mentors.
The Regional Business Partner Network is the other main door. Its local growth advisors offer free professional advice aimed at improving management skills, and the Management Capability Development Fund subsidises up to 50% of the cost of management training up to $5,000 a year, excluding GST, after a discovery session with a growth advisor.
Here is a side by side view. Use it for any provider, including Kevin.
Mentoring is the right first step in several situations, and it would be dishonest to say otherwise.
If that is you, register with a mentoring organisation and register with your Regional Business Partner as well. Both cost little and the downside is small.
Paid coaching earns its fee when the cost of staying stuck is higher than the cost of the help. Watch for these signs.
One more point on price. Eligible NZ businesses may get RBPN co-funding of up to 50% for one-to-one coaching programmes. Rules change, so check the current position with your Regional Business Partner growth advisor before you assume what is covered.
Yes, and many owners do. A mentor offers a long view and a friendly ear. A coach turns the decisions you are weighing into a plan for the next 90 days. The mistake is expecting a mentor to hold you accountable if you have not agreed that with them, or expecting a coach to replace the wisdom of someone who has run your type of business for decades.
Kevin is a paid business coach and advisor for established owners. His background is over 30 years in business, including at DDB, Ogilvy and Saatchi and Saatchi working on 60+ global brands, then founding or co-founding 9 companies, and coaching one-on-one since 2017. Coaching clients surveyed through The Icehouse return a Net Promoter Score of +72.
If you are pre-launch or very early, Kevin will tell you mentoring is the sensible start. If you run an established business and want a diagnosis, a plan and someone to hold you to it, that is his work.
"Kevin has been a game changer for us. I had tried a couple of high-profile US entrepreneur programs but found these just talked about 'mindset', whereas Kevin gives practical advice to grow your business that you can implement immediately."

If you are unsure which kind of help suits your stage, the Find Your Growth Fit questionnaire takes a few minutes.
There are free and low-cost options. Business Mentors New Zealand charges a one-off registration fee, listed at $295 plus GST on 26 October 2026, and your local Regional Business Partner growth advisor offers free professional advice. Check each provider's current terms and eligibility.
Neither is better in general. A mentor suits an early-stage owner who wants experienced perspective. A coach suits an established owner who needs a diagnosis, a plan and accountability. Match the help to your stage and your problem.
Business Mentors New Zealand describes a 12 month mentoring journey, and says it requires at least 12 months. Coaching terms vary by provider, so ask what term and total cost apply before you agree.
Possibly. Eligible NZ businesses may get RBPN co-funding of up to 50% for one-to-one coaching programmes. Business.govt.nz also describes a fund subsidising up to 50% of management training up to $5,000 a year. Confirm eligibility with your growth advisor.
Yes. Many owners start with mentoring while the business is young, then add paid coaching when the business has customers, a team and bigger decisions. There is no wrong order if the help matches your problem.
If you run an established business and suspect the constraint is in the business, not in you, start with a conversation. You will leave knowing which kind of help fits, and if coaching does not suit you, Kevin will say so.
Simple-Growth publishes this guide and Kevin is one of the coaches discussed. Criteria are listed above so you can apply them to anyone.
