Four options, four different jobs. A plain guide to who EOS, Dent's Key Person of Influence, EO New Zealand and one-to-one coaching each suit, built only from what each publishes.

You do not have to pay for advice to get started. In Auckland you can begin with a free clinic, add a $295 + GST mentor if you want a sounding board, use half-funded training if you qualify, and pay for a coach only when you want a diagnosis and a 90-day plan. Here is how to climb that ladder without paying for the same thing twice.

A disclosure first: Simple-Growth publishes this guide, and Kevin D'Ambros-Smith coaches for Simple-Growth, so he is not neutral. That is why the last rung is described the same way as the others: who it suits, and who it does not. Everything about other providers comes from their own pages, read on 9 November 2026 (New Zealand time). If something is out of date, let Kevin know and it will be corrected. Market: New Zealand.

Why Does The Starting Point Matter?

Most New Zealand businesses are tiny. MBIE's 2025 small business factsheet says 97.2% of New Zealand enterprises are small businesses, and 455,730 of them, about 74%, have no employees. If that is you, you are doing the selling, the delivery and the books at once, and a wrong spend hurts. Spend in order of how much you already know about the problem.

The Four Rungs

  • Rung 1: free clinics and workshops. The Auckland Business Chamber events page lists free one-on-one business clinics, free 15-minute virtual Innovation Clinics, and a free Adapting to Change workshop (in person at 90 Symonds Street and online). Best when you have one narrow question. The page shows no dates, so ask the Chamber what is on.
  • Rung 2: a volunteer mentor. Business Mentors NZ says you register online, talk through your needs with its team, and are matched with a mentor, for a 12 month journey and a one-off $295 + GST registration fee. It asks for a New Zealand resident who owns a small business or social enterprise and can commit to at least 12 months. It says it has mentored over 85,000 owners and has over 1,500 mentors (its own figures). Best when you want a sounding board and a wider network.
  • Rung 3: co-funded management training. The Management Capability Development Fund covers half of one-to-one training costs or three-quarters of group training costs, up to $5,000 per business a year. You need under 50 full-time equivalent staff, an established business, an approved provider and a registration with the Regional Business Partner Network. The government page, last edited 3 August 2026, describes the application as moderate effort, four to 12 hours. Funding is not guaranteed. Best when you already know the capability you want to build.
  • Rung 4: a paid coach. Simple-Growth is an approved Regional Business Partner Network provider, and Kevin has coached 200+ businesses one-on-one across 30+ industries since 2017. Coaching starts with finding the real constraint, then sets a 90-day plan with owners, dates and measures. Fees are discussed on a free 30-minute call, and eligible businesses may be able to use rung 3 funding. Best when growth is stuck and you cannot name why.

Which Rung Should You Start On?

  • You have one question and a deadline. Start at rung 1.
  • You are early, alone and want company on the journey. Rung 2.
  • You know the skill gap and want it half-funded. Rung 3, through an advisor.
  • You are trading, growth is stuck and you do not know where. Rung 4, or rung 1 first if you want a free opinion before you commit.

This is not for you if you are hoping someone else will do the work. A clinic, a mentor and a coach all need you to act.

Four Questions To Ask Before You Pay Anyone

  • What is the one problem costing me most right now, in dollars or hours a week?
  • Is it a question, a skill gap or a stuck-growth problem?
  • What can I invest this quarter, in money and in time?
  • What would success look like in 90 days, and how will we both know?

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there free business advice in Auckland?

Yes. The Auckland Business Chamber events page lists free one-on-one business clinics, free 15-minute virtual Innovation Clinics and a free Adapting to Change workshop. The page does not list dates, so check with the Chamber before you plan around them.

How much does Business Mentors NZ cost?

Its website lists a one-off registration fee of $295 + GST for a 12 month mentoring journey.

Can I get a business coach co-funded in New Zealand?

Possibly. The Management Capability Development Fund, accessed through the Regional Business Partner Network, covers half of one-to-one training costs, up to $5,000 per business a year, for eligible businesses with under 50 full-time equivalent staff. Approval is not guaranteed.

Do I need to pay for advice at all?

Not always. If your question is narrow, such as a compliance issue or a single decision, free clinics or a mentor may be enough. Pay for a coach when you want a diagnosis, a plan with dates, and someone holding you to it.

Not sure which rung fits? A 30-minute conversation will tell you honestly whether coaching, a mentor, a clinic or nothing at all is the right move, and you are welcome to take the answer anywhere.
