The New Zealand AI advisory pilot co-funds up to half of an AI plan for small businesses, capped at $15,000, and has been extended to mid-2027. What it is, what to check, and a practical first 30 days. Checked 2 November 2026.
Choose an agency if you have a budget of several thousand dollars a month and want the work done for you. Choose a freelancer if you know exactly which job you need done and can brief it. Do it yourself with AI if you have more time than money and want your marketing to stay in your own hands. Whichever you pick, name the one marketing problem first, or you will pay to fix the wrong thing.
A disclosure first: Simple-Growth publishes this guide, Kevin D'Ambros-Smith is an independent business coach, and Simple-Growth is planning a two-day AI marketing workshop, so he is not neutral. That is why this explains who each option suits instead of ranking them, and shows where the one set of figures comes from. Checked 4 November 2026 (New Zealand time). Market: New Zealand. Prices are in NZ dollars.
The practical difference: with the first two, you pay someone else to learn your customers. With the third, you bring what you already know about them, which nobody outside the business can copy, and let AI handle the repeatable drafting. That only works if you can give it a few hours every week.
This is not for you if you want a promised number of leads or sales. No agency, freelancer or tool can honestly guarantee one.
There is no independent price list for NZ marketing help, so treat any figure as an indication only. One Auckland agency, Digital Hall of Fame Ltd, published a cost guide on 30 June 2026. It gives a full-service agency at "$1,500 to $6,000+ per month", SEO at "$1,500 to $4,000/mo", and Google Ads management at "$300 – $1,500/mo" plus the ad spend itself. It says its prices exclude GST. It does not say how the figures were derived, and it sells these services, so read them as one vendor's view, not a market average. It gives no freelancer rates, so ask for written quotes.
Doing it yourself costs your time plus any AI tool subscriptions, which change often, so check current prices. Simple-Growth's planned AI marketing workshop has no dates, price or format yet. Its self-paced programs start from US$97.
"Kevin got me to connect our ERP, email, website and Google Analytics to AI, and it has changed how we find and keep customers. AI now writes tailored prospecting emails every day and reaches out to lapsed customers with the products they bought before, and we're already getting positive replies. Our blogs, newsletters and SEO are all stronger too. Kevin doesn't just talk about AI, he helps you put it to work in your business."

Neither is automatically better. An agency suits an owner who wants a team and has the budget. A freelancer suits an owner who knows the one job and can brief it. Either can disappoint if the problem is not named first.
AI can draft and repeat quickly. You still decide who to target and what to say, and that judgement is the part that matters. Many owners use AI for drafts and keep a freelancer or agency for a specific job.
There is no single right figure. Start with the problem you want fixed, ask each provider for a written 12-month total excluding GST, and compare the answers.
New Zealand has had an AI advisory pilot that co-funds part of an AI plan for small businesses. Read our guide to how it works and check the official terms before you rely on it.
It is a planned two-day workshop where you build a one-page marketing plan on your own business with reusable AI prompts. Dates, price and format are not set yet. You can join the interest list to hear first.
Be the owner who names the one marketing problem first, then pays for exactly the help that fixes it.
Not sure which suits you? A 30-minute conversation will tell you, and you are welcome to take the answers to any other provider.
