Private label now owns 52% of UK grocery sales. Here's why SME FMCG suppliers are losing range reviews — and the six-point system that fixes it.
ANZ's Business Outlook for September 2026 showed New Zealand business confidence easing for the second month running — down to a net +52, from +54 in August — while a net 48 percent of firms still expect to raise prices and investment intentions sit at a mixed 22.6, dragged down by a weak +2.2 in retail. None of that is a crisis. It is, in ANZ's own words, "cautiously moving forward." But cautious data creates a specific trap for you as an SME owner, and it's worth naming before your next quarter's decisions get made inside it.
The enemy isn't the softer confidence number. It's what owners quietly do in response to it: freeze. Hiring pauses, marketing budgets get trimmed first, and price rises that were already overdue get shelved "until things settle." The irony is that the same survey shows construction firms still planning price rises at a net 67 percent, well above the national average — a reminder that this is a sector-by-sector story, not a single verdict on the economy, and treating it as one costs growth-minded owners real money.
"I catch up with Kevin once a week and it is definitely the highlight of my week. He just sees different opportunities so clearly. I would not have considered the B2C market as an opportunity before working with Kevin and now it is a major focus for us. He has opened up so many new opportunities for us."

The real obstacle isn't the economic data — it's that uncertainty, even mild uncertainty, makes "wait and see" feel like the responsible choice, when it's actually a decision with its own cost. Every quarter spent waiting for a certainty that a cautious environment will never fully deliver is a quarter a competitor who kept moving used to take ground. This is exactly where a coach who reads the data with you, sector by sector, replaces a gut-level freeze with an actual decision.
If you freeze on "cautiously moving forward" data, you will be in the same place next quarter. Be the owner who reads it properly and keeps moving.
