Most NZ businesses are owner-run and many have no staff, so advice has to fit one person's week. Here is how coaches, consultants, mentors and peer groups differ, what is publicly known about cost, and how RBPN funding can help. Checked 1 November 2026.

Three months ago you couldn't keep up. Now the phone's gone quiet and you're second-guessing whether to hold onto your people, run a promotion, or just wait it out, and there's no one to run any of it past except maybe your partner at 10pm, when they're as tired as you are.

You're not the only one feeling whiplash. A 2026 Xero Emotional Tax Return study, reported by CPA Practice Advisor, found unpredictable demand is a top stress driver for 28 percent of US small business owners. Read the study. The swing itself is common. Riding it with no outside perspective is what turns a normal season into a lonely one.

Keep riding it alone and the cost isn't dramatic, it's quiet: the promotion you didn't run because you weren't sure, the good staff member you let go a month too early because the number scared you, the Sunday you spent re-doing a decision you'd already second-guessed twice. None of it shows up as one bad day. It shows up as a year that felt harder than it needed to.

The Enemy Isn't the Quiet Season. It's Facing It With No One to Call

Every business with any seasonality has a flat-out season and a quiet one, that part is normal and usually unavoidable. What isn't normal, or at least shouldn't be, is making every decision about it by yourself, in your own head, with no one asking the question you're avoiding.

I worked with a bike park in Wanaka running eleven different revenue streams across a genuinely seasonal business. They'd sold 730 season passes, 300 of them returning customers, which left 430 still to sell in ten weeks, six a day, every day, to hit the number. On its own, that's a stressful sprint to run solo. With someone outside the business helping them see it as six-a-day instead of "430 to somehow sell," it became manageable. Their service mechanic got one KPI for the quiet stretch: offer fifty customers a free bike check. Repairs and rentals went up. Accidents went down. One simple move, seen clearly, because someone was there to help spot it.

That's the real value of a coach in a feast-or-famine business: not motivation, and not a magic answer, but another set of eyes that turns an overwhelming number into the next right move, during the exact weeks you're too close to the business to see it yourself.

Why Most Owners Ride It Out Alone Anyway

The obstacle usually isn't believing a coach could help. It's the quiet assumption that asking for help during a tough stretch means admitting you can't handle your own business, exactly backwards, since the owners who ask earliest are usually the ones who come out of the quiet season fastest.

This is where having someone who has seen a dozen other seasonal swings, and isn't emotionally inside yours, makes the difference: turning "it's gone quiet, what do I do" into one or two specific moves you can make this week, not vague reassurance that it'll pick up again.

This isn't for you if you'd rather white-knuckle every quiet patch alone and call it resilience. It is for you if you're ready to have someone in your corner who's seen the pattern before.

What the Next Quiet Season Could Feel Like

Picture the next slow month landing, and instead of dread, you've already got someone to call who's helped other owners through exactly this. What if, before you went to bed that night, you already knew what the next move was, instead of lying there turning it over alone? The season's still quiet. You're not facing it alone. That's not a guarantee the phone starts ringing sooner. It's the very real possibility of feeling steady either way, and of looking back on this season as the one where you asked for help early instead of late.

If you're riding the feast-and-famine cycle with no one to call when it's quiet, that's exactly where coaching earns its place.
