94% of NZ owners say they're not reaching their business goals. Not from lack of effort — from nowhere to see progress. Here's the visible scoreboard that fixes it.
You've got a five-year strategic plan, a KPI dashboard with eleven metrics on it, and a quarterly reporting structure that would look at home in a business ten times your size. None of it is wrong, exactly. It's just borrowed — built for a company with a strategy department, not a 12-person team where the owner still answers the phone. The single biggest strategic mistake Kevin sees SME owners make isn't a bad idea. It's an enterprise idea, dropped into a business that can't absorb the overhead of running it.
The Balanced Scorecard, one of the most widely taught strategy tools in business schools, was developed by Robert Kaplan and David Norton to help giants like General Electric and Mobil manage strategic alignment across dozens of semi-autonomous business units. It's a genuinely brilliant tool — for solving a problem you don't have. You don't have thirty business units to align. You have one business, one bank account, and one version of the truth sitting in your head. When an SME owner adopts an enterprise framework wholesale, three things happen: planning starts eating hours that should go into the business itself, the plan gets too complex for the team to actually use day to day, and — the real cost — nobody notices the strategy isn't fit for purpose until eighteen months of drift have gone by. Harvard Business Review's ongoing research on strategy execution consistently finds that the gap between strategy and results is rarely a bad plan — it's a plan nobody can hold in their head well enough to run the business by.
Before you adopt any strategic tool — a framework from a book, a template from a coach, a model your accountant swears by — run it through three questions:
1. The Headcount Test — Was this built for a business with a strategy team, or one person doing strategy in the gaps between everything else?
2. The Monday Test — Can everyone on your leadership team explain this plan, from memory, in under thirty seconds?
3. The Twelve-Month Test — Does this framework assume stability you don't have?
Most SMEs don't need a five-year plan. They need one page: the three numbers that matter this year, the one thing standing in the way of them, and the next ninety days of action against it. That's not a simplified version of enterprise strategy — it's a different discipline entirely, built for how a small business actually moves.
"What we achieved in the last 3 months working with Kevin would have taken 2 years. Kevin's assistance has been very inspirational to our staff. We have achieved changes and changes of thought patterns it could have taken 2 years in normal trading conditions."

Here's the uncomfortable part: most owners know their strategy process feels heavy and disconnected from how the business actually runs — and they keep it anyway, because a borrowed framework feels like proof of rigour. It looks like "proper" business. Simplifying feels risky, like you're doing less. In practice, the opposite is true: stripping a strategy back to what a small team can actually execute is harder work than keeping the complicated version, because it forces you to decide what actually matters. That's exactly the kind of decision most owners are too close to their own business to make alone — which is where an outside operator who has actually run and sold businesses this size becomes more valuable than another framework.
If your strategy document is more impressive than it is useful, that's exactly the kind of gap Simple-Growth exists to close.
...and you become the owner whose strategy fits on one page your whole team can run.
