Hiring too early burns cash on capacity you don't need yet; hiring too late caps growth before anyone admits it. Here's how to time headcount off real capacity signals instead of a gut feeling.
The coaching profession has never had more people in it, and that's not entirely good news for the SME owner trying to hire one. The 2025 ICF Global Coaching Study, run by PwC and published by the International Coaching Federation, counted a record 122,974 practising coaches worldwide — up 15 percent since 2023. More choice should mean better outcomes. In practice, it mostly means more noise to filter through before you find someone who's actually done what they're coaching you to do.
Coaching certifications are genuinely useful, and plenty of excellent coaches hold them. But a certificate tells you someone studied a method. It doesn't tell you they've ever had to make payroll with not enough in the account, or let someone go they liked, or watched a launch fail in front of a room of investors. Brett Abeille, one of the owners I coach, put it plainly after trying overseas programmes first: "Kevin has been a game changer for us. I had tried a couple of high-profile US entrepreneur programs but found these just talked about 'mindset', whereas Kevin gives practical advice to grow your business that you can implement immediately." The test that cuts through 123,000 practitioners fastest isn't the certificate on the wall. It's whether the advice changes the moment you walk in with a real, messy, specific problem.

The obstacle isn't a shortage of good coaches — it's that most owners are hiring under time pressure, usually right after a bad quarter, which is exactly the moment judgement is worst. The fix isn't to wait for a calmer month that never comes. It's to run the four questions above as a genuine filter, even under pressure, rather than defaulting to whoever has the biggest following or the slickest funnel.
You get Kevin's big-brand thinking applied to your business, with practical advice you can use straight away, not mindset talk.
Be the owner who picks the right coach and stops struggling with the same problems.
