Rocket Lab began in New Zealand and is now headquartered in Long Beach, California. Three source-linked lessons in outside thinking for US business owners, plus a five-question blind-spot test.
Every SME owner has a version of the same sentence in their head: "it's just faster if I do it myself." Said once, it's true. Said every week for three years, it's how a $2M business quietly caps itself at $2M. Research cited by Entrepreneur.com found that roughly three-quarters of business owners say they struggle to delegate effectively — not because they don't understand delegation in theory, but because the short-term math always looks like it favours doing it yourself.
The trap is that "faster" is measured wrong. It's measured against the five minutes it takes you to do the task right now, not against the compounding cost of you being the permanent bottleneck for every task like it, forever. Entrepreneur's reporting on delegation struggles among business owners makes the point that this isn't a time-management failure — it's a measurement failure. Owners are comparing the wrong two numbers.
The fix is a simple filter that forces the right comparison, applied to every recurring task on your plate.
1. Set your real number — Calculate what an hour of your time is actually worth to the business, based on the highest-value work only you can do: deals only you can close, decisions only you can make, relationships only you hold.
2. Run every recurring task against it — For each task you personally still do, ask honestly: could someone be hired or trained to do this competently for less than your number? If yes, it fails the test.
3. Clear one task a week, not ten at once — Delegation debt didn't build up overnight and it won't clear overnight. Pick the single task costing you the most relative to your number, document it, hand it off, and check back in two weeks — not two days.
"Kevin has simplified a lot of the processes that have been floating in my head. It has made things easier to navigate as we begin to launch a new service offering to the market. I feel confident and able to do this, thanks to Kevin."

The real obstacle is rarely time. It's trust, and the fear that handing something off means it'll be done worse, or that the business somehow needs you to stay indispensable to feel safe. That fear is almost never examined honestly by the person carrying it — it takes someone outside the business to name what's actually happening: that the owner's identity has become tangled up with being needed for everything, and that this is now the ceiling on the company's growth, not the market, not the team, not the economy.
If you're the reason nothing moves when you're out of the building, that's the delegation debt Kevin clears first with you.
...and you become the owner whose business keeps moving when you are out of the building.

Burger King once sold a one-cent Whopper only to people standing next to a McDonald's. Here is the under-$5k version any SME owner can run, and what a 1760s potter teaches about removing buying risk.

Rising revenue and a shrinking bank balance usually mean the same thing: one account doing the job of four. A simple account split fixes it before it becomes a crisis.

Managers now spend over a fifth of their working week in meetings, and senior leaders admit most of it is wasted. A fixed meeting rhythm fixes more than your calendar.

Most SME owners set ad budgets and discount limits by gut feel. One number, worked out properly, tells you exactly what a customer is worth and what you can afford to spend to win one.

Most small businesses pour their whole marketing budget into this week's sale. The research on 30 years of advertising says that is exactly the wrong ratio.

Most SME owners are confident they will hit this year's goals, and most will not. The fix is not more effort, it is a plan that fits on one page and gets checked every week.

A new market, a new product line, a second location: most lose money the same way, by skipping the three numbers that would have told them how big the opportunity really was.

Most people picture coaching as a conversation. The sessions that actually move a business are a loop, repeated every week, until it becomes how the owner thinks.

A forty-item to-do list with none of the three that mattered finished is not a time management problem. It is a filter problem, and the Eisenhower Matrix is the filter.

A good salesperson gets four real conversations a day. A good presentation, given once, can reach four hundred. Here is why most SME sales teams never use it.
