The Census Bureau says 17% to 20% of US businesses use AI. The Chamber says 58% of small businesses do. Here is why they differ and where an owner should point AI first.

You'd take on more customers tomorrow if you could. The demand is there. What isn't there is you, there's only one of you, and right now you're the one doing the books, chasing paperwork and holding half the business together by memory, so growth keeps getting postponed to "once things calm down."

A March 2026 Simply Business survey of 1,092 US micro-business owners found 80 percent regularly handle non-revenue-generating tasks like admin and finance themselves, and 54 percent name a lack of time as their primary barrier to expansion. Read the report. The growth gap most owners describe as "not enough demand" is, more often, "not enough owner."

The Enemy Isn't a Lack of Demand. It's a Business Built to Need You

Here's what's really going on: every process that only works because you personally remember it, chase it or approve it is a ceiling on how big the business can get, no matter how good the product or how strong the demand is. You can't be in two places at once, so the business can't be bigger than the hours you personally have.

I worked with a mortgage brokerage where meetings were only worthwhile about half the time, because clients would turn up without the documents needed to actually move the loan forward. We moved document collection online, upfront, before the meeting was even booked. Worthwhile meetings went from roughly 50 percent to roughly 95 percent, nearly double the capacity, from the same number of hours in the same week, with no new hire and no new marketing spend.

Clockwork: Designing the Business to Run Without You

Mike Michalowicz's Clockwork approach starts from a simple, slightly uncomfortable question: which parts of this business would fall over tomorrow if you disappeared for two weeks? In my own words, built for a business your size, that question breaks into three moves.

  • Find the one high-value block — the handful of decisions only you can make, and protect that time fiercely.
  • Move everything else into a system — a checklist, an online form, a simple process document, the way the brokerage moved document collection out of the meeting room.
  • Hand it to someone, even partially — a team member, a part-time hire, or a piece of software, so the task survives without you remembering it exists.

Growth doesn't usually require working harder. It requires removing yourself, one task at a time, from the jobs that are quietly capping how big the business can get.

"Kevin's knowledge and intellect on all things business, no matter what industry it is, he just seems to find gems that you can focus on. I would not have considered the B2C market as an opportunity before working with Kevin and now it is a major focus for us. He has opened up so many new opportunities for us."

Why Most Owners Know This and Still Hold On

The real obstacle isn't finding the system. It's trusting that something will still get done properly if you're not the one doing it, which is a genuinely hard thing to hand over when you built this business from nothing. Most owners wait for proof it'll be fine before they let go, and the proof never arrives, because nothing changes until they do.

This is where coaching earns its place: not telling you to "delegate more," but sitting with you while you build the actual system, choose the actual person or tool, and let go of one task at a time in an order that doesn't put the business at risk.

This isn't for you if you believe the business can only run properly through your own hands. It is for you if you're ready to build something that can grow bigger than your own hours.

What Growth Could Feel Like From Here

Picture taking on the next ten customers without taking on another ten hours of your own week, because the system, not your memory, is what's holding the business together. That's not a guaranteed outcome. It's a genuinely available one, and it starts with naming the one task this week that only exists because you haven't let it go yet.

If your business can't grow past the hours you personally have in a day, that's exactly where we'd start.
