If your enquiries dry up the day you stop posting, you don’t have a marketing system. Here’s the Flywheel fix and a sign on a wall that outperformed a campaign.
Stop posting for two weeks and watch what happens to your enquiries. If the answer is they dry up, your marketing isn’t a system. It’s a performance only you can give, every single day, forever.
That’s exhausting, and it’s common. US owners spend close to eight hours a week consumed by worry about their business, and 61% say they sleep less than before they started, according to Xero’s 2026 Emotional Tax Return research. Marketing that depends entirely on your personal hustle is one of the quietest reasons why.
The villain here is the funnel: the idea that marketing is a one-way pipe you pour attention into at the top, hoping enough comes out the bottom as sales. A funnel treats every customer as the end of the process. It ignores the thing small businesses actually have going for them that big brands don’t: customers who already trust you, telling other people.
I worked with a light and sound installation team years ago. Small outfit, local jobs, nothing flashy. But on the wall of their workshop, where every client walked past it, was a sign: “We are big in Japan.” It wasn’t an ad. It wasn’t a campaign. It was a single, confident, slightly strange credibility signal that did more marketing in five seconds than most small businesses manage in a month of social posts, because it made every visitor curious enough to ask the question themselves, and then repeat the answer to someone else.
That’s close to the Marketing Flywheel model, popularised as an alternative to the funnel: attract, engage, delight, and feed what delights your existing customers straight back into attracting new ones, so the system compounds instead of resetting to zero every time you stop pushing. A funnel needs constant new fuel at the top. A flywheel needs one good push and then maintenance. Build your own flywheel starting this week:
“Kevin has some amazing ideas around marketing, things we would have never thought of ourselves. He also helped us through the process of getting into supermarkets. He has gone above and beyond what he needed to!”
— Amy Nixon, Icehouse Coaching Programme
The execution gap isn’t creativity — most owners have a “big in Japan” fact somewhere in their business. The gap is that nobody outside the business can see it clearly enough to pull it out and use it, because you’re too close to your own story to spot what’s actually interesting about it. That outside eye is most of what a marketing session with a coach is for.
Here’s a quick test for you to run this week: look back at your last ten enquiries and ask how many came from someone searching cold versus someone who already knew your name through a client, a sign, a review, or a post someone else shared. If most came cold, your flywheel isn’t turning yet, and that’s fixable without a bigger ad budget. You don’t need a rebrand to find your big in Japan fact. You probably already have it, sitting in a client conversation you’ve had a dozen times without writing it down anywhere a stranger could see it.
This isn’t for you if your instinct is to buy more ads before you’ve found your one true hook — that’s spending to patch a gap a flywheel would close for free. It is for you if you’re ready to build something that still brings in enquiries on the Friday you don’t post anything.
If your marketing stops the day you stop posting, that’s the first thing we fix.
