Big brands never approve a campaign on gut feel alone. Here is the cheap, 48-hour pretest SME owners can run on any piece of marketing before a single dollar goes to media.
Most SME owners do not fail at growth because they lack ambition. They fail because what they call a strategic plan is really a budget with a motivational cover page stapled to it. If next year's strategy is last year's numbers plus ten percent, you are not alone, and you are not stuck because you lack intelligence or effort. After 30-plus years building strategy for 60-plus global brands and founding nine companies, Kevin can tell you the fix is not a longer plan. It is three questions almost nobody asks in the right order.
Research commissioned by Findex and covered by CFOtech Australia in March 2026, across 521 SME owners and senior decision-makers, found that 90 percent mainly use their accountant or adviser for compliance and administrative tasks, not strategy and growth. Only 10 percent mainly use their adviser for strategic advice. Separately, 45 percent said they had avoided a business decision, or made the wrong one, simply because they did not know where to go for proper help. That is the pattern behind most thin plans: owners are surrounded by people trained and paid to keep them compliant, not to diagnose what is actually holding the business back, so the diagnosis step gets skipped entirely and the plan starts at step three.
Strategy professor Richard Rumelt built what he calls the kernel of good strategy: three parts, always in this order, that separate an actual strategy from a list of hopes. In Kevin's words, applied the way an SME owner actually needs it heading into next year's plan, it looks like this.
Run this before next year's budget is locked in, not after. A budget without a diagnosis underneath it is just last year's numbers, slightly adjusted.
"He really got our vision from the beginning and has been a huge help in putting together a clearer plan and strategy for the next five years. Working with Kevin D'Ambros-Smith has given us the space to pause and reflect - on where we are now, where we want to be and how we get there."

Most owners know diagnosis matters. The reason it still gets skipped is that an honest diagnosis is uncomfortable - it often points at the owner's own pricing, role or customer mix, not just the market. So the plan jumps straight to action: a new tactic, a new price list, a hire, anything that feels like progress without first naming the real constraint. That is exactly the kind of blind spot a trained, outside eye is built to catch before a single dollar is committed to fixing the wrong thing.
If your plan for next year is being built the same way as every year before it, that is the first thing Kevin helps you fix, and you become the owner whose plan starts with a real diagnosis.
