A good coach doesn't start with your goals. They start with three numbers most owners can't answer on the spot, and that gap tells them exactly where to begin.

The short answer

If you run a UK business with 5 to 249 staff and want a structured, heavily subsidised course, Help to Grow: Management is hard to beat on price. If you learn best alongside other leaders, look at a peer group such as Vistage. If you want one person focused only on your business, a coach fits. Many owners combine them.

Kevin D'Ambros-Smith is a business coach and advisor who has coached 200+ businesses one-on-one across 30+ industries, after a career at DDB, Ogilvy and Saatchi and Saatchi and founding nine companies.

Which of the three is right for a UK owner?

These are three different kinds of help, not three versions of the same thing. One is a government-backed course. One is a group of peers. One is a personal working relationship. The right choice depends on how you learn, your budget, and what is actually holding the business back.

Below is a fair look at each, using each provider's own published information, with who it suits and who should look elsewhere. We have included Simple-Growth as one of the options, so we have also listed who should not choose it.

What is Help to Grow: Management, and who is it for?

Help to Grow: Management is a UK government-backed leadership and management course delivered by business schools. According to the British Business Bank, it is a 12-week programme of around 50 hours of learning, including one-to-one mentoring, taught at over 50 UK locations with a mix of face-to-face and online sessions. The participant fee is £750, with the government funding the other 90 per cent. Cardiff Business School states that the government has renewed its commitment to fund the course until 2029.

To qualify, the business must be UK-based, have been operating for at least a year, not be a charity, and employ 5 to 249 people. Applicants must be senior decision-makers who commit to completing all sessions. Businesses with 10 to 249 staff can send two people.

  • Best for: owners and managers who want a structured course, a growth plan and a business-school setting at a low cost.
  • Not ideal if: your business has fewer than 5 staff, you want a long-term relationship rather than a 12-week course, or you want help with your specific market and customers rather than general management capability.

What does a peer group like Vistage offer?

Vistage UK describes groups of 12 to 16 executives from non-competing organisations who meet once a month, with individual coaching sessions with the group's Chair. Its UK site also lists 22 networks based on industry or special interests. Fees were not published on the page we checked, so ask for them and compare the full annual cost with the alternatives.

  • Best for: leaders who value candid advice from peers who have faced similar decisions, and who like a regular rhythm and a trusted room.
  • Not ideal if: you want hands-on work on your own marketing, sales or strategy between meetings, or you prefer one-to-one working to a group setting.

How does a franchise coach like ActionCOACH work?

ActionCOACH's UK site says it has more than 200 business growth specialists in the UK and about 1,000 worldwide. Its enquiry form groups businesses by turnover, from under £250k up to £2m and above. Pricing and session format were not published on the page we checked, so ask for both before you commit.

  • Best for: owners who want a defined programme and a coach based near them.
  • Not ideal if: you want a coach with a particular industry or big-brand marketing background, which varies from coach to coach in any franchise network.

Where does Simple-Growth fit?

Simple-Growth is Kevin D'Ambros-Smith's one-on-one coaching and advisory practice, based in Auckland and delivered by video call. It starts with your life goal, finds the one real constraint first, then builds a 90-day plan with owners, deadlines and one number to watch. It draws on over 30 years in business, including DDB, Ogilvy and Saatchi and Saatchi, and Kevin has worked and lived in the UK. The outside view is the point: someone not surrounded by your industry, your conference circuit or your usual playbooks.

  • Best for: owners of established businesses who want more customers, a sharper strategy and big-company know-how made simple.
  • Not ideal if: you want a subsidised course, a peer group, or a coach in your own time zone. Sessions with a coach in New Zealand need planning around the time difference, so raise this on the free call.

Quick fit guide: who should choose what?

  • 5 to 249 staff, want a structured, low-cost management course: Help to Grow: Management.
  • Learn best from other leaders, want a monthly peer room: Vistage or a similar peer group.
  • Want a defined programme with a local coach: ActionCOACH or another coaching franchise.
  • Established owner wanting more customers, sharper strategy and an outside view: Simple-Growth one-on-one coaching or advisory.
  • Executive or manager inside a large organisation, working on your own leadership: an executive coach, or your employer's coaching platform.
  • Starting out or very small budget: free or low-cost mentoring, and The Inside Track newsletter.

Who should not choose Simple-Growth?

If you are a corporate executive working on your own leadership or career, an executive coach is built for that and we will tell you so. If you are pre-revenue, start with free mentoring. If what you need is a government-subsidised course or a peer room, the first two options above are better matched.

Our online programmes, Quick Wins, Make It Happen and Know Your Future, are launching soon. Join The Inside Track to hear first.

What one owner said about working with Kevin

"Kevin has the ability to make everything so simple. He can take something that seems like a complicated task and break this down to 1 or 2 key things, so that achieving the desired outcome becomes easier and very achievable."

Can you combine them?

Often, yes. A common pattern is to use a low-cost course to build management fundamentals, then bring in a coach to apply them to the specific customers, offer and numbers of your business. The risk is overload: three programmes at once means none gets finished. Before you choose, find the one real constraint, because that tells you which kind of help to start with.

Frequently asked questions

Is Help to Grow: Management worth it?

For eligible owners it is a low-cost way to build management skills and a growth plan: the participant fee is £750, with 90 per cent funded by the government, according to the British Business Bank. Whether it is worth it for you depends on whether you have the time to complete a 12-week course and whether general management capability is your constraint.

Is a peer group better than a coach?

Neither is better in general. A peer group gives you a room of experienced leaders and a monthly rhythm. A coach gives you one person working on your specific business. Choose by how you learn and by what is holding you back.

How much does a business coach cost in the UK?

Providers such as Vistage and ActionCOACH did not publish fees on the pages we checked, so we have not quoted a figure. Ask each provider for the total annual cost, what is included, and the notice period.

Can I work with a coach in another country?

Yes, if the coach is set up for video calls and you are comfortable with the time difference. Simple-Growth coaching is delivered by video call from Auckland, so ask about session times on the free call.

How do I choose a business coach?

Ask what they have personally built, who they have coached in businesses like yours, how progress is measured, and what happens if it is not working. Then speak to more than one provider.
