Still at the kitchen table at 9pm telling yourself this is temporary? The isolation of owning a business is common, measurable, and fixable — here's how.
Sixty-eight percent of small business owners now say they'd rather have a stable, predictable business than a fast-growing one. That's not caution talking. It's three years of interest-rate shocks, supply chain chaos and cash flow scares teaching 6,000+ SME owners across 18 countries the same lesson: growth you can't sustain isn't growth, it's a countdown. If you've been quietly pulling back from the "more customers, more channels, more speed" playbook and wondering whether you're falling behind, new global research says you're not behind. You're ahead.
For over a decade, the standard advice to SME owners has been simple: grow fast, grow now, worry about the foundations later. It's baked into pitch competitions, into business media, into most of the "hustle" content clogging LinkedIn feeds. It's also, according to new data, no longer what business owners themselves believe.
Mastercard's 2026 Dreamonomics research, based on interviews with more than 6,000 small and medium business owners across 18 countries and published this month, found that 68% now prioritize stability and predictability over fast expansion. Fifty-four percent are actively avoiding financial risk they don't need to take. And 61% would rather deepen relationships with the customers they already have than spend energy chasing new ones. You can read the full findings .
Mark Barnett, Mastercard's global head of SMEs, put it plainly: "Stability is overtaking speed... a deep customer relationship is a stable customer relationship."
This isn't businesses giving up on growth. It's owners refusing to keep paying the price of growth that isn't built to last — the overextended cash flow, the systems that can't cope with demand spikes, the team that burns out chasing targets nobody stress-tested.
If speed isn't the goal, what replaces it? Kevin runs every Simple-Growth client through what he calls the Depth Audit — three checks, in order, before a single dollar goes toward finding a new customer.
1. Customer Depth Check. Rank your existing customers by revenue. Look at the top 20%. Ask honestly: is there another 20% of revenue sitting inside that group already — through a second product, a higher tier, a simple upsell — that you haven't asked for? Most owners find there is.
2. Stability Stress Test. List the three things that would break if demand doubled tomorrow — cash flow, staffing, delivery systems. Fix the worst one before you spend a cent on growth marketing. A new customer you can't service properly is a refund, a bad review, and a wasted acquisition cost.
3. Risk and Protection Check. The Dreamonomics research found 71% of SME owners now rate cyber and financial protection as a top priority — but only 37% currently have the tools in place to back that up. Close that gap before you scale, not after a breach or a bad debt forces you to.
This sequence isn't slower growth. It's growth that doesn't need to be rebuilt six months later.
“He really got our vision from the beginning and has been a huge help in putting together a clearer plan and strategy for the next five years. Working with Kevin D'Ambros-Smith has given us the space to pause and reflect — on where we are now, where we want to be and how we get there.”

Almost every SME owner Kevin coaches already knows, on some level, that their top customers are underused and their systems are one bad month from breaking. Knowing isn't the problem. The problem is sequence and accountability.
Without a system, "deepen relationships with existing customers" stays a good idea on a whiteboard, because there's no meeting where it's someone's job to report on it weekly. Without a coach or an outside set of eyes, the stability stress test never happens, because the owner is too close to the business to see which piece is closest to breaking. And without protection built in from the start, cyber and financial risk sits on the "important but not urgent" list until it becomes an emergency.
This is where the gap between a good idea and a working system usually gets closed — not with more information, but with a structure that makes the sequence happen whether or not the owner feels like it that week. For a deeper walk-through of turning existing customers into your best growth channel, see the free training here.
If your growth plan still starts with "find more customers" before "get more from the ones I already have," the Depth Audit is where Kevin would start with you.
...and you become the owner who grows on foundations that hold.
