UK SME owners now spend almost twice as long on admin as on growth, per a fresh 2026 survey. Here's the three-step Weekly Execution Audit Kevin uses to help owners flip that ratio.
Most SME owners don't have a strategy problem. They have a calendar problem.
A fresh Amex SME Barometer survey of 1,000 UK micro, small and medium business owners (American Express and Small Business Saturday UK, published 20 July 2026) puts a hard number on something I've watched play out in coaching rooms for over 30 years: the average owner now spends roughly six working days a month on admin and finance tasks, and only 3.6 days on sales and business development — nearly twice as much time managing the business as growing it. Fifty-four percent say paperwork gets in the way of actually running the business. Thirty-six percent say their own lack of capacity, not the market, is the biggest barrier to growth. One in five are working 60 hours a week or more.
If that sounds familiar, you don't need another strategy. You need to look at where your hours actually went last week.
Here's the myth worth dismantling: that a full calendar is evidence of a serious business. It isn't. Admin protects the business you already have — invoices paid, compliance met, the lights on. Growth activity builds the business you actually want — the next customer, the next offer, the next hire that buys you back an hour. They feel identical from inside a busy week. They are not the same work, and only one of them moves the business forward.
The SME owners I coach who plateau aren't lazy and they aren't short on ideas. They're drowning the one activity that compounds — direct selling, relationship-building, decision-making on the business — under the one activity that doesn't — paperwork that has to get done but never grows anything.
You don't fix this with a bigger to-do list. You fix it by auditing where the hours actually go, every week, in three steps.
1. Name the one growth-moving task you keep bumping to tomorrow. Not the admin task you're avoiding — the growth task. For most owners it's a sales call, a pricing decision, or a conversation with a customer they've been putting off.
2. Block owner-only hours before admin hours, not after. If growth work only happens in whatever time is left over once the inbox is empty, it never happens — the inbox is never empty. Put the growth hour in the calendar first, admin around it.
3. Delegate or delete anything that isn't growth or customer care. Every task gets one of three answers this week: it grows the business, it serves a customer, or it's neither — and if it's neither, it gets handed off or cut, not postponed again.
Three steps, not ten. Run it this week, not once things calm down — for the one in five owners already clocking 60-hour weeks, calm down isn't coming on its own.
Kevin has been a game changer for us. I had tried a couple of high-profile US entrepreneur programs but found these just talked about mindset, whereas Kevin gives practical advice to grow your business that you can implement immediately.

That's the difference between a framework you nod along to and one you can run by Monday morning.
Almost every owner I sit down with already knows admin is eating their growth time. Knowing isn't the problem. The real obstacle is that nobody is checking the calendar against the plan except the owner — and owners are notoriously forgiving graders of their own week. Without someone outside the business asking where Tuesday actually went, the admin pile wins by default, every single week, because it has a deadline and growth work doesn't.
This is exactly where an accountability structure — a coach, an advisory board, a weekly check-in that isn't optional — earns its place. Not to tell you what to do. To make sure the growth hour you blocked on Monday still exists by Friday.
One note on where this stops being a coaching problem: if the admin pile is genuinely too large for the hours available — not a prioritisation issue but a real workload one — that's a signal to bring in a bookkeeper, a Chartered Accountant or a Xero advisor, not to simply try harder. Knowing that boundary is part of running a properly supported business.
If admin is winning your week, book a session and let's rebuild your calendar around growth, not paperwork.
