Some customers drain you, some fund you, and you can't always tell which. A one-hour grading exercise shows SME owners exactly where their real revenue sits.
Search “best business coach Auckland” and you'll find dozens of owners who have hired one, gotten a burst of clarity in month one, and quietly stopped renewing by month eight — before the coaching actually compounded into anything. Then they hire someone else, and the cycle resets. If you've done this once already, here's the uncomfortable truth: the problem usually wasn't the coach. It was the switching.
Coaching gets sold, and often bought, like a quick fix — a few sessions to unstick a problem, then back to business as usual. Real change in an SME doesn't work on that timeline. The first three months of coaching are almost always spent building an honest, evidence-based picture of what's actually happening in the business, underneath what the owner believes is happening. The next three to six months are where that picture turns into changed decisions, changed habits, and changed results. Owners who switch coaches every twelve months are perpetually re-starting that first phase — paying for diagnosis, again and again, and never reaching the phase where it pays off.
It's the business equivalent of restarting a fitness programme every eight weeks right as the results were about to show. The muscle memory never has time to form.
Coaching value doesn't arrive on a straight line. It compounds, the same way a relationship with a good accountant or a trusted board member compounds — later conversations get faster and sharper because the groundwork from earlier ones is already in place.
1. Months 1–3: Diagnosis — the coach learns your numbers, your team, your blind spots. Slow, foundational, unglamorous.
2. Months 4–9: Momentum — decisions get made faster because the diagnostic work isn't being repeated every session. This is where most of the visible results happen.
3. Months 10+: Compounding — the coach starts catching problems before they become expensive, because they know your business well enough to spot the pattern early.
If you're evaluating whether coaching is “working,” the honest answer depends on which stage you're in. Judging it at month three is judging a foundation before the building is up.
“Talking with Kevin the first time was so valuable and we were learning so much. Within an hour Kevin had us thinking about our business and our goals in a totally different way. In fact we were supposed to be catching a flight but we decided it was more important that we continued the meeting with Kevin.”
— Angus and Cameron, Flatpack Co
Most switching isn't driven by the coaching itself — it's driven by discomfort. Good coaching surfaces uncomfortable truths about pricing, about a hire that isn't working, about a founder's own bottleneck behaviour. It's easier, in the moment, to decide “this coach isn't the right fit” than to sit with the discomfort of being told something true. Before switching, it's worth asking honestly: is this about fit, or is this about avoidance? A coach who has actually built and sold nine businesses, and sat in boardrooms at McDonald's and IBM, isn't telling you what's comfortable — they're telling you what's true, because that's what moves the number.
Kevin works personally with a select group of SME owners to build the systems, clarity, and accountability that make growth inevitable — not accidental.
...and you become the owner who stays long enough to see coaching compound.
