Doing the books, the invoicing and the tax yourself at 9pm? Simple-Growth's AI Productivity Audit sorts every repeat task into automate, augment or eliminate.

You find out how last month went about three weeks after it actually mattered. By the time the numbers are in front of you, the decision that would have fixed it was already missed. You know you should be looking at this weekly. You've told yourself that for months. And you still haven't, because knowing what to look for was never really the problem.

Here's the part most owners miss: you don't have a numbers problem. You have a nobody-checks-with-you problem. And that's a completely different fix.

I've coached 200-plus businesses one-on-one since 2017, and almost none of them needed a more complicated dashboard. They needed someone who'd notice if the number didn't show up on Monday.

The Enemy: Believing This Is A Discipline Failure

Owners tell themselves they're just not disciplined enough to check their numbers weekly. That's the wrong diagnosis, and it's a cruel one. Discipline works brilliantly when something external is watching. It collapses, for almost everyone, the moment it only has to answer to itself at 9pm on a Monday when there are four other fires going. That's not weakness. That's how humans are built.

Xero's 2023 New Zealand research found 70% of owners reported anxiety and 60% trouble sleeping in the past twelve months, with 94% saying they weren't reaching their business goals (Xero Money Matters, 2023). Not reaching a goal you can't see the week it slips is barely a surprise. It's the expected outcome.

One Weekly Email, Two Numbers

A coaching client of mine ran six physiotherapy clinics. The owner didn't need a new reporting system. We cut it down to one Monday morning email, two measures: capacity against target, and income against forecast. That's it. Nothing else landed in that inbox on a Monday.

What actually changed wasn't the spreadsheet. It was that someone else, every single week, was waiting to hear what those two numbers said — and would ask if the email didn't come.

That matters for more than the P&L. Every owner I coach is ultimately trying to buy back something personal — a Friday afternoon, a weekend without the laptop, a sense that the business is actually under control rather than quietly controlling them. None of that is possible while the numbers only surface weeks after the decision window has already closed. A weekly rhythm isn't admin. It's the thing that makes the rest of the life you're building for actually reachable.

"Specific to my business requirements and takes a systematic approach. Practical, specific, and pertinent to my business."

— Simon Keepa, Icehouse Coaching Programme

Build Your Own Monday Email This Week

  • Pick two numbers — not ten. The two that would genuinely change what you do this week if they moved.
  • Set the day and time you'll check them, every week, no exceptions for a busy month.
  • Tell someone — a coach, a partner, an accountant, anyone — that you're sending it, and ask them to actually expect it.
  • Keep it to one email. The moment it grows into a report, it stops getting read.

Key Takeaways

  • Diagnose it correctly first — this is an accountability gap, not a discipline failure.
  • Choose two numbers that would actually change this week's decisions.
  • Find one person who will notice if your weekly check-in doesn't show up.
  • Keep it to one email, every Monday, for a month before judging it.

This isn't for you if you already have someone holding you to your numbers every week and it's working. It is for owners who know exactly what they'd check if someone were actually waiting to hear it.

You don't need to be a different kind of person to run your numbers weekly. You need one person outside the business who's actually expecting the email.

If nobody currently notices when your weekly numbers go unchecked, that's the first thing we'd fix together.
